RIMPAC coincides with Summer Pulse, the simultaneous deployment of seven aircraft carrier strike groups in the Pacific Rim.
Japanese defense forces are docked at Pearl Harbor in RIMPAC 2002 ironically near ruins of the USS Arizona, destroyed by the Japanese navy in 1941.

Part of this year's maritime training exercise called RIMPAC 2002 (Rim of the Pacific) which started on 25th of June 2002, will be a "sinkex" in which decommissioned naval vessels become targets for the guns, missiles, torpedoes and rockets of U.S. and allied warships and jet fighters.
All three have been part of the Navy's "ghost fleet" at Pearl Harbor since they were removed from the naval register -- the Holt since 1992 and the White Plains and the Rathburne since 1995 -- waiting to be scrapped, sold to another country or sunk.

First conducted in 1971, RIMPAC is the largest naval exercise in the Pacific.
This year's exercise is the 19th RIMPAC and involves approximately 11 000 military personnel from Australia, Canada, Chile, Japan, Peru, the Republic of Korea, the United Kingdom and the United States, including sailors, marines, soldiers, and aircrew.
With RIMPAC concluding at the end of July, the ships will be returning home in early August with the exception of HMCS REGINA who will carry on to the Western Pacific to make port visits in Japan, South Korea and China.
