Remote Imaging Protocol Encyclopedia Article @ BeachLocale.com (Beach Locale)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The Remote Imaging Protocol (RIP), also referred to as RIPscrip (and frequently, yet incorrectly as RIPscript), was an early vector graphics protocol, created by Jeff Reeder, a founder of TeleGrafix Communications.
RIP was designed as a method of transferring graphic imagery between two modem users, primarily to enhance the aesthetic experience of a BBS (Bulletin Board System).
RIPscrip was introduced in 1993 and consisted of ASCII-text descriptions of vector-drawn graphics and images, along with facilities to create menus and clickable buttons.

RIPscrip 3.0 - Technical White Paper
RIPscrip commands can be intermixed with normal, TTY or ANSI text information so that you can mix and match graphics and text information inside of a single document.
RIPscrip 3.0 is not like that - it is designed around a hardware independent display environment, capable of being implemented on a broad variety of display environments and operating systems.
RIPscrip 3.0 allows you to define a world coordinate system to a maximum size of 32,767 by 32,767, giving you plenty of room to accommodate video hardware over the next several decades.

RIPscrip is not a proprietary protocol standard and is open to suggestion from the rest of the world.
Regardless of whether or not the current RIPscrip code coming across the modem is in the middle of a line or not, the RIP playback file will be assumed to start at the beginning of a line.

If the user has the RIPscrip client software -- RIPterm, included with the BBS so your users can download it -- The Major BBS automatically senses it, engages RIP support, and allows the user to log on and work the system with a mouse.

 artpacks.acid.org - introduction
Primative mediums such as ASCII and ANSI text, and RIPscrip are still popular, but have moved far away from the mainstream and into this little niche we call the digital "ArtScene".
RIPscrip was developed by Telegrafix in the early 90's with the intentions of giving dialup-BBS users a choice of graphics, text, or both.
Unfortunately, due to the hideously proprietary nature in which their protocol was written, it failed miserably and was not accepted by the masses as they had originally planned.

From 1987 to about 1999, we worked mostly with proprietary technology and only distributed, (sold, licensed), compiled programs and copyright protected graphic images and template systems.
The facts were adding up that BBS's were dying, and the internet was the way of the future, so starting in 1993, we began work with an OS called TSX-32 and it's counterpart TSX-Online, (S & H Computer Systems, Nashville TN), and set up one of the first multi-emulation multi-protocol information systems.
Between 1993 and 1994 the web went from the Cern style LYNX text based browser to full blown color graphics.
