  RISC OS - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
RISC OS was a rapid development of Arthur 1.2 after the failure of the ARX project.
RISC OS 3.00 was released with the A5000 in 1991; it was almost four times the size of RISC OS 2 and ran from a 2MB ROM.
RISC OS 3.70 followed in 1996, the primary changes in the OS for this version was supporting the StrongARM processor that was made available as an upgrade for the Risc PC.

RISC OS, rather than having a textual list of task names alone, uses the icon bar to give you a graphical display of applications available for use and resident in memory as well as the general capabilities of the machines hardware.
RISC OS applications are, essentially, specially laid out directories and, thanks to some careful design in the OS, are entirely independant of their physical location on the disc.
This means many RISC OS owners tend to favour running in a lower colour depth, and often resolution as well, in general - switching to a higher one as circumstances demand.

RISC OS 4 users : a copy of these ToolBox modules together with the installation procedure can be found at the RISCOS Ltd public download area.

A common query from many a programmer when it's suggested they should make use of the RISC OS Select or Adjust features is that they have no way of finding out what they are.
RISC World, supplied on CD-ROM, comes with a good collecton of useful software each issue as well as the usual mix of news, features and reviews.
The implications for RISC OS are probably somewhat limited, but we remain happy to be corrected on that.

I am the current maintainer of the RISC OS port of Vim and this page serves as a means to distribute the latest stable version of Vim for RISC OS, as well as providing links to some useful Vim resources.
Much of the real work of the RISC OS port was done by Thomas Leonard and others up to version 5.4a and I've been building current versions since early in 2001 (5.7).
This version is untested on RISC OS earlier than 4 but should be fine (although I wouldn't recommend using it on a machine with little memory).

 Software for RISC OS
Here are several applications I have written for RISC OS, the operating system used by Acorn's 32 bit ARM-based computers.
For example, a file with the extension '.gif' would have it's RISC OS file type appropriately set to &695 and the '.gif' characters removed from the end of the file name.
Originally written to allow RISC OS users to enter a competition to commemorate the 50th anniversary of this historic event, the emulator simply emulates the running of programs and not the interface to the actual computer.

What I can also say is that Firefox should not suffer the problems seen in many RISC OS browsers when rendering complex tables and not multitasking for long periods.
Whilst it is likely that the maintainers of the flash player will continue to improve their player, it is likely that for a long time, the most comprehensive flash player for RISC OS will be that built into the forthcoming Oregano 3.

RISC OS is efficient, easy and pretty logical for me (and many others), and it's developing more quickly now than ever before (no thanks to the now defunct Acorn Ltd.).
My version (RISC OS 4.02, which is not the latest version) as installed on my StrongARM equipped RiscPC really shows up Windows as a slow, quirky and unstable piece of software.
RISC OS is thus an incredible 'secret' to most folk.

The most recent version is compatible with RISC OS 4 and the 32-bit RISC OS 5.
