RISCiX 1.2 has more features than other versions of the operating system and many of these features have been added to ensure that it is one of the first UNIX systems to be X/OPEN certified (to XPG3 Base profile).
RISCiX 1.2 is a larger and more featured version of RISCiX and as a consequence it takes up more space and has a performance overhead particularly when using the X11 Window System.
The new version of RISCiX is considerably larger than previous versions and even with the data compaction techniques available it would not be possible to fit a full version onto the internal disc.

The R140 was based around the ARM2 and the R260 around the ARM3, both had at least 4MB RAM and came in the same style case as the A440.
The R140 used the A440 basis with RISCOS (V2) in ROM, which was used to boot the computer and start RISCiX, the R260 used the A540 basis with a modified version of RISCOS (V2.01).
As a side note, the backplane in the R140 is a different type to the backplane in the A440, though appart from this, the actual machines are identical.

RISCiX requires a mimimum of 4 MB but is happier with 8MB or more.
I am told this only worked with RISCiX 1.1x, because the 1.2x kernel was too big, even when compressed, to fit on a floppy disc.
The A680 runs a variant of BSD 4.3 Unix called RISCiX : although the A680 was the first machine built to run RISCiX, it was used to develop versions later released on machines similar to the Archimedes series - the R140, R260 and R225.

AMIX (Amiga Unix) RISCiX ArchBSD Lynx Inferno Helios What I am looking for is basically what versions existed and when they were released, and also from where did they originate.
For instance I know that RISCiX originated from BSD 4.4 but that is all I know.
I also know that inferno grew out of the research for plan 9, but what version of plan 9 it evolved from I don¹t know.

This was an interim development machine for RISCiX.
The A680 was Acorn's internal development workstation for the Acorn flavour of UNIX, RISCiX.

Functionally identical to an A440 machine it had 4 Meg of memory and was provided with an 52 Meg st506 drive with RISCiX (Acorns brand of Unix) on it.
Due to memory contraints and a large page size it did not fair terribly well as a Unix workstation.
R260 - functionally identical to the A540 the R260 comes with Unix (well RISCiX) by default and due to the increased power of the hardware runs it much better.
