RJD2 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
RJD2 is Ramble John Krohn, a hip hop producer.
RJD2 was born in Eugene, Oregon, and raised in Columbus, Ohio.
Deadringer pushed RJD2 into the company of such esteemed producer/composers as DJ Shadow and Prefuse 73, and was met with critical acclaim within the hip-hop community.

But RJD2 rejects their help, shooing away various hired hands as he meticulously interconnects his four turntables, two mixers and an MPC (a drum machine/sampler).
RJD2 held together this potpourri of pop culture with a steady, palatable procession of easily recognizable melodies and head-nodding rhythms.
RJD2 applied this formula to his next endeavors, a collaborative album with emcee Blueprint and a series of backing productions for some of underground hip-hop's biggest names.

RJD2 spoke to us on the phone from his house just before his tour, where he sounded happily domestic while taking a break from working on his roof.
RJD2: Producing or recording lets you look back at it, and it gives you something that you can put on your wall [so that you can] have something 20 years later when you're shoveling concrete--[like] a tale to tell your kids.
RJD2: There are people that are doing interesting things, but I feel like the stuff that's going down as legendary is getting smaller and smaller.

Rjd2: Deadringer: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Rjd2 is in the very enviable position of being the hottest new artist on Def Jux, which is quickly establishing itself as the epicenter of post-millennial hip hop.
After Rjd2 dropped the superb I Really Like Your Def Jux Baby Tee earlier this year, a steady buzz began to build that Deadringer would be the next step in instrumental, sample-based hip-hop.
That's not to say that there aren't dark moments on Deadringer, but that Rjd2 maintains a stylistic consistency while oscillating emotions and moods at the drop of a hat, and that its ability to capture the various hues that comprise life's mosaic is a rare thing to find in today's music.

But RJD2 is different; he’s a producer, not a rapper, and his beats are far removed from the rugged density found on the majority of other Def Jux output.
RJD2 also proves capable of making beats for MC’s, as he demonstrates on the shuffling beat of “Final Frontier” with Blueprint, the keep-it-real anthem “F.H.H.” with Jakki da Motamouth, and the introspective “June” with Copywrite.
RJD2 infuses the album with some wonderful production flourishes, but the majority of the songs do little to blow you away with their sheer innovation.

RJD2, WHO is currently all the rage in underground hip-hop circles, is an unlikely candidate for producer of the moment.
To be fair, though, RJD2 is talented, and underground heads didn't just jock his Deadringer harder than DJ Shadow's equally vaunted The Private Press this summer because it came out on Definitive Jux.
RJD2 hasn't joined that much-admired beat club just yet, but Deadringer proves he has the same sense of tunnel vision.

RJD2 thrived on their enthusiasm and gave the people what they wanted, which was dance-ready renditions of tracks from his two excellent full-lengths Deadringer and Since We Last Spoke.
And RJD2 seemed genuinely grateful when, after a distended and mind-bending show-closing track that corresponded disturbingly well with the images of mass production and destruction that sputtered across the white cloth draped behind him, he kindly thanked everyone for coming out.
RJD2 may prefer the solitude of his studio, but he understand that in order to continue doing what he does, he's got to bring the music to the people.

Rjd2 is best known for his work with Ohio's indie rap crew MHz, but if fans think this is simply another braggadocio-filled rap assault, the first cut proves otherwise.
But Rjd2 is well aware that this project would likely never have occurred without the distinguished reputation he gained from working with such rhymers.

RJD2 - Deadringer - almost cool music review
Although I listen to a lot of music that I feel is fun and exciting, in the past few years I've sort of drifted away from music which on the surface is obviously so, simply because so much of it has gotten so damn dumb these days.
There was awhile there while I enjoyed the heck out of artists like The Chemical Brothers and Fatboy Slim, but their formulas grew tired to me over time and I found myself relying more on the pranksters like Kid 606 and others to deliver my cheap thrills.
Fortunately, I've discovered RJD2 recently (thanks to a lot of recommendations from readers of the site), and I must say that I haven't heard an album so head-bopping good in quite some time (or at least since the recent Out Hud disc).

RJD2, not to be mistaken with R2D2 from Star Wars, is definitely one of the hottest producers in the underground hip-hop scene today.
RJD2 places a very static-ish vocal sample over the track, creating an eerie atmosphere which leads into a constant variety of sharp, yet blended guitar notes.
I don’t know how well I described these tracks in the review, because RJD2 has a knack for making beats with such depth and multi-facetiousness that it makes it hard to pick out which instruments are creating which effects and sounds.

So it's a wonder why the neighboring county of instrumental hip hop, with its acres of open space and ample opportunities for upstart beat-makers, hasn't seen a massive influx of new immigrants.
For RJD2, upholding the ethic of rap music without the rapper requires maintaining a strict collagist aesthetic -- everything that isn't sampled from vinyl, such as guest vocals or his own guitar playing, is made to sound like it was.
In this regard, RJ is something of a sound-quality conservative, insisting that every source crackle with dust and feel circuitry-modulated, the way his inspiration Marley Marl's did.

Rjd2: Since We Last Spoke (2004): Reviews
Since We Last Spoke continually subverts expectations of what an Rjd2 album is about, yet the songs all stick together in a cohesive way, and the album still somehow bears the distinct personality stamp of the RJ we already knew, even as some of it diverges wildly from the path he's been on so far.
The order of the songs in the end seems carefully chosen, not unlike a play or movie where the emotional resonance from each piece is meant to build you up, bring you down, and build anticipation through each movement towards the climactic ending.
RJD2 possesses the rare ability to transform moldy samples into fresh-as-tomorrow compositions.

Its cut-and-paste sonic collages were not entirely new to hip-hop instrumental, but RJD2 proved more adept at the multi-dimensional task of backing MCs than his predecessors, achieving a unique blend of funky, soulful and futuristic sounds.
However, RJD2 was not fully satisfied with the success of "Dead Ringer," which was originally intended as a single and then an EP before being expanded into a full-length album.
But it has also lost him the favor of some of the very critics and fans who were heralding his work in the first place and had burdened him with their own expectations.

On his breakout solo debut, Dead Ringer, Rjd2 sent listeners on a musical foray into instrumentalism, feasting on styles both old and new, and in the process creating a sound that's emerging as one of the most interesting and exciting new voices in instrumental music.
In a genre filled with ambient spacemen and droning techno fromage, Rjd2 brought a sense of song structure and vitality that was sorely missing, evening harkening back to when instrumental groups like Booker T. and the MG‚s got radio play (not a joke).

The hip-hop DJ and producer RJD2 stacked those changes on top of one another on Thursday night at the Bowery Ballroom, collapsing four generations of musical transmission into one performance.
And there's yet another change: when he goes on tour, RJD2 has to find ways to perform his album tracks, using turntables to reanimate these compositions with hectic (sometimes messy) cut-and-paste operations.
For his first encore, RJD2 said he would bring out one of the performers he had sampled, then returned to the stage wearing a wig and a fake mustache and carrying something even more ridiculous: an acoustic guitar.

Rjd2 - Dead Ringer | Album Archive | PM Media Review
I never thought a comment like that could be used as a compliment, but in this case it is. It's a kind of old-school type (mostly) instrumental hip-hop that still sounds refreshing; however, Rjd2 is certainly a crate-digger and his samples have a lo-fi, aged sound to them.
Upon the first listen, most Rjd2 initiates will probably think that this is just forward-thinking hip-hop from the late 80s.
It's nice to encounter a musician that wears his influences on his sleeve instead of trying to hide them and insisting that his recycled ideas are "new".
