The studio was original built by silent movie pioneer Thomas Ince in 1918.
RKO acquired the studios in 1928 and Joseph Kennedy served as one of the studio heads.
By the late 1970s the once lovely studio had become a dilapidated wreck and remained that way until the mid 1980s, when it was purchased by the joint ownership of Grant Tinker and Gannett.

Previously, the RKO theater chain had been divested in the wake of the Hollywood Anti-trust Case of 1948; in 1953, the chain was sold to the Century Circuit; some houses that survived into the 1970s later were sold to Cineplex Odeon.
The former RKO lots were home to Desilu until 1966, when Desilu was acquired by Gulf+Western and merged into G+W's Paramount Pictures as the Paramount Television studios, which the Hollywood lot remains to this day.
RKO Pictures have reprinted some RKO titles which had fallen into public domain and syndicated them to television, with a modernized version of the old RKO logos.

Known as the Forty Acres even though the actual acreage is little more than 28 acres (the backlot and the Culver City Studio sites cover approximately 40 acres), this primary backlot for the RKO Studio (another one existed in the San Fernando Valley community of Encino) came into existence around 1926/27.
In 1928, RKO was created and took over the ownership of the Culver City property.
