All RLL majors are required to enroll in an advanced course each semester of their senior year, regardless of whether they have completed the ten-course requirement for the major.
RLL minors earn credit for up to two courses (6 credits) toward their minor in a single semester of study abroad, and credit for up to three course (9 credits) in a year-long program.
RLL majors and minors wishing to study abroad will meet with the RLL International Study Advisor to help determine their eligibility: their progress in the major or minor as well as their GPA will be checked and a recommendation will be made.

 RLL Graduate: Fellowships
RLL is eager to nominate its top applicants, but it cannot forward the name of any student unless the fully completed application, including official GRE scores, has been received in the departmental office.
Outstanding applicants to the MA and/or PhD programs in RLL may be considered for Grinter supplements, awards that provide $2,000 per year for up to three years.
RLL students have competed very successfully for this support.

In RLL encoding, groups of bits are taken as a unit and combined to generate specific patterns of flux reversals.
RLL 2,7 initially was the most popular RLL variation because it offers a high density ratio with a transition detection window the same relative size as that in MFM.
Because of the larger relative window size within which a transition can be detected, RLL 1,7 is a more forgiving and more reliable code, which is required when media and head technology are being pushed to their limits.

 RLL Technical Reference
During the program or RLL initialisation phase once the BSS Header has been loaded into memory, these offsets are changed to be absolute addresses (if the area concerened is being kept in memory).
Normally one would expect RLL's to be automatically loaded and linked by the program start-up code, but this allows for those cases where the programmer wants to control this process himself.
This table is used after a program or RLL has been loaded into memory to adjust all instructions that use absolute addressing and thus need adjusting by the address at which the code was loaded.

RLL produces fast data access times and increases a disk's storage capacity over the older encoding scheme called MFM (modified frequency modulation).
RLL requires more processing, but stores almost 50 percent more data per disk than the older MFM (modified frequency modulation) method.

These RLL controllers demand far more accuracy from the drive's magnetic systems than they were ever designed to deliver.
The latest RLL controller from WD is the nicest I've seen, however using their default interleave of 3 on a standard 4.77 Mhz PC or XT requires 28 revolutions to read an entire track!
RLL is still so new that adequate drive testing equipment is in very short supply.

RLL programs are represented as stylized circuit diagrams, with some number of one-bit inputs and outputs.
RLL programs are evaluated by an interpreter that simulates the circuit, reading new inputs and updating outputs.
The complexity of RLL arises mainly from the interaction of the interpreter with the language, which has special instructions that can alter the interpreter's behavior by e.g., skipping portions of the circuit.

 Feature: Secure Deletion of Data
The RLL encoding used in most current drives is described by pairs of run-length limits (d, k), where d is the minimum number of 0 symbols which must occur between each 1 symbol in the encoded data, and k is the maximum.
The grandfather of all RLL codes was FM, which wrote one user data bit followed by one clock bit, so that a 1 bit was encoded as two transitions (1 wavelength) while a 0 bit was encoded as one transition (« wavelength).
To increase the recording density, MFM was gradually replaced by (2,7) RLL (the original "RLL" format), and that in turn by (1,7) RLL, each of which placed less constraints on the recorded signal.

 An illustrated Guide to harddrives
MFM and RLL are actually coding principles for the hard disks.
As a coding principle, RLL was more effective than was MFM, so in the "old days" you could experiment using RLL controllers to MFM disks.
MFM as well as RLL are WD1003 compatible, meaning that the standards would work with the at that time most widely used controller chip from Western Digital.

RLL controllers use a special code that can read 16-bit patterns of information, rather than the 8-bit patterns of MFM.
There are two RLL coding techniques which are differentiated by how many consecutive zero bits can be stored before automatically inserting a one bit.
To address the aspects of signal degradation caused by nonlinear effects and to increase data density, some drives use RLL 1,7 (d=1, k=7), with a minimum of one zero between transitions to address partial erasure and no more than 7 zeros in a row to assist in clock-sync recovery.

Later on, controllers using 2,7 (additional info and facts about RLL) RLL (or just "RLL") encoding increased this by half, to 7.5 megabits per second; it also increased drive capacity by half.
RLL (Run Length Limited) was a way of encoding bits onto the platters that allowed for better density.
Most RLL drives also needed to be "compatible" with the controllers that communicated with them.

 Run Length Limited (RLL)
I say that RLL is a family of techniques because there are two primary parameters that define how RLL works, and therefore, there are several different variations.
The particular variety of RLL used on a drive is expressed as "RLL (X,Y)" or "X,Y RLL" where X is the run length and Y is the run limit.
Due to its greater efficiency, RLL encoding has replaced MFM everywhere but on floppy disks, where MFM continues to be used for historical compatibility reasons.

Instead, specifically designed parity-check RLL codes can be used to detect the presence of such a random error, and channel side-information, like the magnitude of phase-errors generated at each transition of the HF waveform in a PLL, can be used to locate the error.
It is not mandatory that these corresponding segments are located at the same (horizontal) position within the different RLL rows, even though this is preferred, thus resulting in the latter case in exactly vertically oriented columns constituting the column parity-check codewords.
One practical advantage of the zig-zag scheme is the fact, that the RLL coding can be done in a row-after-row fashion, which makes this scheme suitable for DC-control on the column parity-check rows via proper selection of the channel words in the merging segments 49.

With the RLL encoding scheme, the actual density of magnetic flux transitions on the disk media remains the same as with MFM encoding, but the timing between the transitions must be measured much more precisely.
RLL encoding places more stringent demands on the timing of the controller and drive electronics.
RLL encoding is also much more susceptible to noise in the read signal, and conventional oxide media coatings did not have a sufficient signal-to-noise ratio for reliable RLL encoding.

I'm pretty sure this is the pattern returned by the drive's RLL algorithm when fed with a solid pattern of bits (not sure if they're 1 or 0).
The RLL also makes it so bit shiftings are not completely straightforward; sometimes shifted data gets 1's complemented, and sometimes one bit stays put while the others shift around it.
I originally used "Normal" compression in WinZip (and the PKZIP format isn't too efficient anyway), so some portions are show a surprising degree of redundancy, with long runs of identical characters; because of this I have so far been able to recover one of the zipped files.

The use of the RLL system is reasonable transparent from the view of the application programmer who is writing C programs, and the user who uses the resulting C programs.
Routines may, however, include references to functions or variables that are in the other modules that are in the same RLL library as themselves, or in other RLL libraries that were specified as being used by this RLL library when it was built.
Once you have written your RLL compatible library module(s) and have done the compile to produce the SROFF versions of the files (the ones whose name end in _o), the next stage is to actually build all these modules into a RLL library.

 RLL encoding
Short for "Run-Length Limited encoding", RLL encoding is a method or storing information on a computer hard disk drives, floppy disk drives, CD's, DVD, and Blu-Ray that was originally invented by IBM.
This method of storage is carried out by hardware in the disk controller and is less prevalent than the modified frequency modulation (MFM) encoding scheme.
