The Queen Elizabeth 2, often called "the QE2," was the flagship of the Cunard Line from 1969 until she was succeeded by RMS Queen Mary 2 in 2004.
The QE2 was considered the last of the great transatlantic ocean liners prior to the Queen Mary 2, and was the last oil-fired passenger steamship to cross the Atlantic in regularly scheduled liner service before she was refitted with a diesel power plant.
The "2" in the name distinguishes her from the first ship of that name, the RMS Queen Elizabeth, named for Queen Elizabeth, the wife of King George VI of the United Kingdom, who was Queen Consort when that ship was built.

The Queen Mary 2 is a Cunard Line passenger ship named after the earlier Cunard liner Queen Mary, which was in turn named after Mary of Teck.
The ship was constructed to replace the RMS Queen Elizabeth 2 (''QE2''), which was the Cunard flagship from 1969 to 2004.
The ship prefix "RMS" is affixed to the QM2, which used to stand for "Royal Mail Steamer," but which now stands for "Royal Mail Ship." The QM2 is not a steamship like her predecessors, but is powered by gas turbines and diesel generators which produce the power to drive her four electric motors.

Now as the postwar years saw prosperous years for Queen Mary, a problem first noticed when she was still new to the sea began to gain considerable attention.
Despite the model tests that showed she would be a very stable ship, Queen Mary rolled so much that, in the words of some, she could "...roll the milk out of a cup of tea..." and Cunard's confidence in her stability had led to the shortsighted absence of storm rails in her corridors.
