After completing his first front line tour in July 1983, Prince Andrew was appointed to 702 NAS at RNAS Portland in September to convert onto the Lynx helicopter.
The Duke and Duchess’s first child was born on 8 August 1988 at the Portland Hospital in London and was named Beatrice Elizabeth Mary of York.
Their second child was also born at the Portland Hospital on 23 March 1990 and named Eugenie Victoria Helena.

With the retirement of the fixed wing aircraft carriers, the Phantoms transferred to the RAF and departed for RAF Leuchars in 1972, leaving the base as the home for the Commando Helicopter Squadrons and the fixed wing Fleet Requirements and Aircraft Direction Unit (FRADU).

After graduating from CFS, he then moved to RNAS Culdrose to become an instructor on 705 NAS teaching students the basics of flying a helicopter, and the Gazelle HT2 in particular.

Later, from 1970, it was stationed at Portland, in Dorset, with 737 Naval Air Squadron where, as an HAS.3, it was assigned to operate from the stern platforms of several of the six County Class guided missile destroyers, including HMS Glamorgan and HMS Norfolk.
Throughout the late 1970s most of the Wessex HAS.3 helicopters at Portland were being replaced by Sea Kings, which could carry more torpedoes or depth charges and had the security of twin engines, with greatly extended endurance.
XM328 then sailed with HMS Antrim on her second deployment to the South Atlantic, was transferred to 772 Squadron when 737 Squadron disbanded on 4th February 1983, returned to Portsmouth with HMS Antrim in March 1983 and was flown back to Portland.
