With the coming of the jet era, Yeovilton's main runways were extended during 1952 and it became the HQ of Flag Officer Flying Training in May 1953.
RNAS Yeovilton was selected as the main shore base for the Navy's fleet of Sea Harrier FRS.1 (and later, F/A.2s) and the first examples arrived in 1979.
RNAS Yeovilton is also home to that shrine of UK Naval Aviation, the magnificent Fleet Air Arm Museum.

After trials of Lieutenant Commander Douglas Taylor's innovative ski-jump in 1977, a ramp was installed at Yeovilton for practice ski-jump assisted take-offs, near the eastern end of Runway 09/27.
The Sea King HC.4 gradually replaced the Wessex HU.5 with the Commando Assault Squadrons from 1980 and following the closure of RNAS Portland (HMS Osprey) in 1999, HMS Heron became the main shore base for the Lynx fleet, again.
During periods of busy flying training, pressure on the Yeovilton circuit is relieved by the use of RNAS Merryfield, nearby.

Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton, or RNAS Yeovilton, (Heron">HMS Heron) is an airfield of the Royal Navy, sited in South West England a few miles north of Yeovil in Somerset.
With the wind-down of RN fixed wing operations, the Phantoms transferred to the RAF and departed for RAF Leuchars in 1972, leaving the base as the home for the Commando Helicopter Squadrons and the fixed wing Fleet Requirements and Aircraft Direction Unit (FRADU).
In July 2006 Sea King HC.4 helicopters from RNAS Yeovilton were deployed to Cyprus to assist with the evacuation of British citizens from Lebanon.

Yeovilton saw Cpt Alan Wade in the SERCO operated Slingsby T67M Firefly give a fine aerobatic performance while the Cobham Formation that had been seen at RIAT made a welcome and appropriate part of Yeovilton's display.
Once again, Yeovilton provided a top class airshow with an absolutely cracking flying display which was very well balanced with some exciting star displays, particularly the Hunter and the SAA 747.
Even with the massive crowds, Yeovilton was just as pleasant a venue as usual, even though the there were far too few toilets for the record crowd leading to a few frustrating queues.

RNAS Yeovilton in Somerset is home to the Fleet Air Arm's Sea Harrier aircraft and helicopters that deploy aboard the Royal Navy's three aircraft carriers.
During the conflict, RNAS Yeovilton provided most of the Royal Navy's aerial assets and crews, and the focal point of this remembrance will be a gathering of representative aircraft types from both sides of the conflict.
Their debut appearance at Yeovilton is cause for celebration in itself, but moreover, it is also their sole UK display this year; a real coup for the organisers.

A Navy Party of 102 personnel deployed from RNAS Yeovilton, in two waves to South Cerney in Wiltshire on the night of 23 July, under the command of Lt Cdr Mark Parry, AEO of 815 Naval Air Squadron for Op GIRAFFE (later renamed as Op OUTLOOK).

The chaps at Yeovilton really understand aviation enthusiasts - they open the gates on the Friday before the airshow to allow ticket holders onto the airfield to photograph the arrivals.
There is also a ticket-only photo evening allowing access to the static park and flightlines without having to contend with the masses present on the airshow day itself.
Earlier in the week it had been reported that little or no visitors were to be expected, but fog in the vicinity of the carrier on the Thursday morning had caused the aircraft present at the show to divert to Yeovilton.

 Hawker Sea Hawk FGA.6 WV908
Delivered to the Fleet Air Arm at RNAS Abbotsinch in February 1955, it served initially with 807 NAS (Navy Air Squadron) based at RNAS Brawdy, and was embarked on HMS Albion and HMS Bulwark.
In October 1960 it was re-assigned to second line duties with 738 NAS at RNAS Lossiemouth, and stayed for a two-year period.
After flying from Cornwall for several years the aircraft was transferred to Yeovilton to join the Historic Flight in 1982 to begin a two year overhaul programme.

RNAS Yeovilton (aka HMS Heron) is situated in Somerset - not far from the A303/A37 junction and about 4 miles North of Yeovil.
The remainder of the viewing points at Yeovilton involve a bit of walking so if you're particularly lazy or just satisfied with what you've seen so far you may wish to skip the rest of this guide.
There has been talk of severe restrictions on access to the Yeovilton village area during the show as well, so you are unlikely to be able to bring a car down the road towards the village.

It was delivered to RNAS Culdrose a month later, but was immediately placed in store.
From August 1949 TF956 was used by 799 NAS, based at RNAS Yeovilton.
She flew with the RNHF regularly for the next seventeen years, and was seen at events across the UK, and was a frequent sight over the Yeovilton area during the summer months.

The Strategic Defence Review confirmed that RNAS Yeovilton will remain a major Royal Naval and Defence establishment, and recommended the transfer of the Sea Harrier squadrons and support staff from RNAS Yeovilton to RAF Cottesmore and Wittering in 2003, as part of the Joint Force Harrier initiative.
The precise mix of aircraft types to be based at RNAS Yeovilton in the next decade remains under review.
As part of the study into the basing strategy of the Joint Helicopter Command, I have recently agreed to the recommendation, based on operational and cost grounds, that helicopters based at RAF Odiham and 9 Regiment AAC Dishforth should remain in their current locations, rather than move to RNAS Yeovilton.

Yeovilton and Boscombe Down: The weather promised much and, with a four-month jolly away on the horizon, we decided to take one last look at the soon-to-be-retired Navy Sea Harriers at Yeovilton.
As with Yeovilton's Sea Kings, the new Apaches stayed well clear of the public viewing area which forced us into finding somewhere on the far side of the airfield to try and get some better pictures.

It was assembled at Langley airfield and test flown on 23rd February 1948, and was delivered to the Fleet Air Arm on 8th March at RNAS Culham.
The unit returned to Yeovilton in pristine condition in June 2000 and was duly re-fitted to the airframe.
The aircraft made a welcome appearance on static display at RNAS Yeovilton's 2000 Air Day and engine runs commenced in late July, and work was re-started to get the aircraft serviceable.

Commander Chris Alcock (Cmdr. Air HMS Ark Royal) who had just flown in to Yeovilton by Merlin from Ark Royal in Lyme Bay, then gave a run down on Arks operations in the Gulf in Exercise Telec.

 Fisher out runs RNAS Yeovilton Lynx
In a unique and dangerous race, Bridgwater's Team SWR Formula 3 driver, Josh Fisher, currently lying 3rd in the National class, was set a challenge of a 2 mile runway drag race at RNAS Yeovilton in Somerset on the Tuesday before the base's famous Air Day.
With only one practice start Josh only got to see the first 100 meters of his race course before he was lined up to face a challenge even he was not really expecting to win.
When the flag dropped and the Helicopter, piloted by one of the RNAS Yeovilton's top pilots (Lt Steve Gamble), swooped down Josh was already 400 metres down the runway and speeding ahead.

The 23rd of March 2005 saw the second of three disbandments in the continuing draw down of Sea Harrier operations at RNAS Yeovilton.
With the departure of 899 NAS now recorded in many photograph albums and column inches, one squadron of Sea Harriers remains at RNAS Yeovilton, 801 NAS.
They too will relinquish their aircraft, in March 2006 as the Fleet Air Arm's fixed wing component moves north with the RAF and reforms on the Harrier GR7/9.

 Bath Rugby : Bath Players Visit Rnas Yeovilton
The players visited the Royal Navy Lynx Helicopter Training Simulator and experienced a flight from Portland to the aircraft carrier HMS Invincible, which happened to be located in the English Channel.
Although this was a simulated flight the players were absolutely amazed by the realistic graphics and movements of the state of the art machine used by trainee frontline pilots.
The specially framed shirts are part of two fantastic competition prizes in association with RNAS Yeovilton Air Day 2004 and Blackthorn Cider.
