 RNID Reveals Hearing Loss Risk Among Young People
Major research published today by RNID shows that three out of four young people (73%) who go to clubs or concerts regularly are risking permanent hearing damage.
The research also shows that whilst almost half of young people (46%) know that the ringing in their ears after a night out is a sign of damage, many (59%) aren't aware this damage is irreversible.
RNID research showed that 86% of 18 - 30 year olds surveyed regularly visit pubs and bars that are so loud they have to shout to make themselves heard.

 RNID research discovers genetic link to hearing loss caused by loud noise
Scientists funded by RNID, the national charity for deaf and hard of hearing people, have discovered a genetic link between exposure to loud noise and hearing loss.
RNID funded this pioneering research at the University of Antwerp2.
RNID successfully lobbied the Government for changes in legislation relating to noise at work which the charity believes is still one of the most underestimated workplace risks.

 Ipsos MORI - Wales Ignores Test To Detect Deafness In Babies, RNID, The Royal National Institute for Deaf People
RNID is calling upon the Welsh Assembly to take the UK lead on Universal Neonatal Hearing Screening (UNHS) and introduce it throughout Wales as soon as possible.
In June 2000, as a result of extensive campaigning by RNID and other key organisations, the UK Government announced its intention to introduce Universal Neonatal Hearing screening in England starting with 20 hospitals from early 2001.

 RNID Calls for More Prominent Warnings on MP3 Player Packaging
New research conducted for RNID's Don't Lose the Music campaign (www.dontlosethemusic.com) reveals that a shocking 58% of 16-30 year olds are completely unaware of any risk to their hearing from using MP3 players and other audio products that attach directly to the ears.
RNID is so concerned that the MP3 generation could be at risk from premature hearing damage, that it's calling on manufacturers of MP3 players to protect consumers by providing clearer warnings on packaging about the dangers of listening too loudly to their products.
RNID's Don't Lose the Music campaign is particularly concerned about the use of MP3 players amongst young people not only because of the high volumes, but the length of time they listen to them for.

 Victim Support Scotland - RNID Typetalk information
RNID Typetalk, is the only national telephone relay service that enables deaf, deaf blind, deafened, hard of hearing and speech-impaired people to communicate with hearing people anywhere in the world.
It is run by the RNID and funded by BT.

The charity for the UK's deaf and hard of hearing found nearly six in 10 16-30 olds were completely unaware of any risk to their hearing from using these devices that attach directly to the ears.
A poll conducted for the RNID at a London station found that eight out of 10 mp3 devices were louder than 80 decibels.

While no safe medical treatments exist to alleviate the symptoms of tinnitus, RNID will highlight to people what equipment, publications and advice is available.

 6 May 2006 - RNID Survey Highlights Hearing Discrimination
The survey showed that only 63% of deaf and hard of hearing people of working age are in employment, compared to 75% of the national work force.
The RNID is urging employers to raise awareness of the different types of deafness and the different forms of communication used, such as sign language and lip reading.
Over half (51%) of those within work felt they had been held back from promotion or developing their careers as a result of their deafness and 34% felt their job didn’t make full use of their qualifications.
