 No. 42 Squadron RNZAF - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was officially disbanded in 1946, but its aircraft continued with general purpose operations at RNZAF Station Ohakea (near Bulls).
To accommodate the new Skyhawk squadron at Ohakea in 1984, 42 Squadron moved to RNZAF Base Auckland (Whenuapai) and absorbed the Andovers of 1 Squadron which was disbanded.
The Squadron relocated to RNZAF Base Ohakea in January 2002 and is under the command of the RNZAF Flying Training Wing located at RNZAF Base Ohakea.

 Army Launches
Late in 1939 a 19.5m (64ft) high speed launch of the type used by the RAF for air sea rescue and target towing was delivered to the RNZAF by the British Power Boat Co., Hythe England.
(The RNZAF was established 1/4/1937.) Based at Hobsonville, and eventually not named, this vessel had three 500bhp petrol engines amd a top speed of 38 knots.
RNZAF and RNZN crews delivered Bombardier to and from Wellington, these crews hada the necessary out of harbour qualifications.

The pilots had already converted at RNZAF Station Hobsonville to the Supermarine Walrus, and were now stepping up to convert to the Singapore in preparation for the long ferry flight of four Singapores to Fiji.

During the early war years the RNZAF's primary task was to train aircrew for the RAF under the Empire Air Training Scheme, however when Japan entered the War the RNZAF turned its attentions to the protection of the Pacific and its own shores.
In the height of war a total of 41,595 RNZAF personnel in seven New Zealand Squadrons were based in Europe, the Pacific and at air force bases around New Zealand.
In this peacekeeping role 29 RNZAF personnel combined with NZ Army personnel and their Australian counterparts, and for four years, between 1982-1986 formed the Rotary Wing Aviation Unit of the Multinational Force of Observers in the Sinai.

Well before a RNZAF 757 stopped to pick up troops in Townsville the other day I was somehow under the impression that New Zealand didn't have any air force, so I'm actually rather impressed.
About the herc - this is not native to the RNZAF - I flew from Sale to Coolangatta for the indy (and back) and both flights were up to three hours late because the herc broke down and they had to change aircraft.
I must say that the RNZAF musn't be very busy - I have a friend in the RNZAF who is on the Navigator course at RAAF East Sale, and for Christmas leave he got picked up by a kiwi 757 enroute from Canberra - he was the only one at Sale.

The largest single engined aircraft to serve with the RNZAF began life with work by Grumman's design and technical teams led by W.T. Schwendler.
Although the RNZAF was originally allocated 63 aircraft from Grumman production in 1943, only 48 were ever delivered, with the first six (NZ2501 to NZ2506) TBF-1’s delivered on the "William Keith" in September, 1943.
At this time, the ground crew component of 8(GR) Squadron were reformed as 30 Servicing Unit (SU) under the RNZAF's policy to have the aircraft pooled and issued as needed to the flying squadrons for operations.

A couple of RNZAF officers including an engineer officer were flown down to look at it on 14th Sept, and after discussions with a Japanese engineer officer and a demonstration of the engine running, this information was relayed back to Piva.
Although he could not locate the relevant file, an RNZAF officer (bless his heart) was convinced that the Zeke had been promised to the War Memorial Museum in Auckland many years before (it had been, in 1947) and that they were to take delivery of it "when they had the room to display it".
Also to expect an RNZAF pilot to ferry this aircraft from Kara to Piva without ASI, etc, even in clear weather is quite preposterous, not that he could NOT have done it, but it would go against everything he had learned as a pilot of heavy aircraft over previous six years.

 SBD-5 Dauntless NZ5057 RNZAF in Profile
The Douglas SBD Dauntless was used for a short time by the Royal New Zealand Air Force, and in that time it distinguished itself as being a plane that delivered its weapons on target, on time.
The origins of the artwork are unknown, but it appears to be a winged stomach carrying a wide assortment of alcohol.
It is to be noted that the RNZAF roundels differed greatly from plane to plane, with some featuring the large white inner ring and blue borders shown here, while others had a thin white inner ring and no blue borders, and there was yet a third variation that had no white bars at all.

 Defence Aspects of the Current and Future Use of RNZAF Base Auckland - Joint Use Post-Consolidation
Whenuapai is currently the preferred operational location because of its proximity to the Devonport Naval base, and the helicopter capable ships, and because Whenuapai (as an RNZAF base) provides appropriate support facilities.

On the recommendation of an RAF adviser, Wing Commander R A Cochrane, the RNZAF became an autonomous organisation on 1 Apr 1937.
Following a major review, replacement of obsolete types was authorised in1962 and by the mid 1960s, the new fleet began to be delivered, together with the first RNZAF helicopters, the Bell 47G Sioux and the UH-1D Huey.
The Bell 47 was the first helicopter to enter New Zealand military service as the 47G-3 model, introduced in two batches in Dec 1965 (6 airframes) and 1970 (7 airframes) to RNZAF Hobsonville and known as the Sioux, during its service.

These aircraft were assigned serial numbers in the NZ5000 range and it was with these SBDs that the Squadron transferred to Bougainville on March 22, 1944 to begin their combat operations.
