It made New Zealand aviation history as the first base to operate the first RNZAF helicopters, the Bell 47G from Dec 1965.
It was the shore base for the RNZN Wasps (maintained by the RNZAF) and during 1965, Hobsonville was administratively combined with next door Whenuapai Airbase to form the RNZAF Base Auckland complex.

In November 1942 operating Hudson patrol bombers from Henderson Field at Guadalcanal, it was the first RNZAF operational squadron to engage in direct combat with the Japanese.
During the tours it was based at Espritu Santo, Guadalcanal, Bougainville, Emirau, Green Island and New Britain.
The Squadron was reformed in 1965 at RNZAF Base Auckland (Hobsonville) where it became the Air Force's only Squadron to operate helicopters.

Following graduation from pilot training in March 1973, he was posted to No. 5 Squadron at RNZAF Base Auckland, flying Orion maritime patrol and related tasks.
Air Commodore Newlands was appointed as the Base Commander of RNZAF Base Auckland in May 1998, during which time he spent a brief period as the Deputy Air Component Commander for INTERFET Headquarters in East Timor.
