Retinopathy of prematurity - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), previously known as retrolental fibroplasia (RLF), is a disease of the eye that affects prematurely born babies.
ROP can be mild and may resolve spontaneously, but may lead to blindness in serious cases.
Patients with ROP are at greater risk for squint, glaucoma, cataracts and myopia later in life, and should be examined yearly to help prevent and treat these conditions.

 RETINOPATHY OF PREMATURITY
Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) causes a disease of the retina.
ROP in some babies continues to progress to stage 4, (partial retinal detachment) and stage 5, (total retinal detachment).
In patients with advanced stage 5 ROP and whose intraocular abnormal blood vessels are not extensive, a less invasive operation such as a scleral buckling procedure, or a closed vitrectomy may be tried, even though the baby is less than 6 months of age.

THE MERCK MANUAL, Sec. 19, Ch. 260, Disturbances In Newborns And Infants
A few children with moderate, healed ROP are left with cicatricial scars (eg, dragged retina or retinal folds) but no initial retinal detachments and are at risk for retinal detachments later in life.
Because significant ROP is rare in appropriately managed infants weighing > 1500 g (3 lb 5 oz) at birth, alternative diagnoses should be considered (eg, familial exudative retinopathy, Norrie's disease).
Patients with residual scarring from ROP should be followed at least annually for life; scars and retinal holes that lead to late retinal detachments can often be treated effectively if detected before progression.

Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) Resource Guide [NEI Health Information]
Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a potentially blinding eye disorder that primarily affects premature infants weighing about 2¾ pounds (1250 grams) or less that are born before 31 weeks of gestation (A full-term pregnancy has a gestation of 38–42 weeks).
ROP occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow and spread throughout the retina, the tissue that lines the back of the eye.
Infants with ROP are considered to be at higher risk for developing certain eye problems later in life, such as retinal detachment, myopia (nearsightedness), strabismus (crossed eyes), amblyopia (lazy eye), and glaucoma.

This caused the ROP to go away in many cases, and reduced the chances of retinal detachments and blindness by about 50% as compared to babies who had no treatment.
