Remotely operated vehicle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
During the mid 1980s the marine ROV industry suffered from serious stagnation in technological development caused in part by a drop in the price of oil and a global economic recession.
ROVs are also used extensively by the science community to study the ocean.
Submersible ROVs may be "free swimming" where they operate neutrally buoyant on a tether from the launch ship or platform, or they may be "garaged" where they operate from a submersible "garage" or "tophat" on a tether attached to the heavy garage that is lowered from the ship or platform.

NOAA Ocean Explorer: Remotely Operated Vehicles
In most cases, however, ROV operations are simpler and safer to conduct than any type of occupied-submersible or diving operation.
The disadvantages of using an ROV include the fact that the human presence is lost, making visual surveys and evaluations more difficult, and the lack of freedom from the surface due to the ROV’s cabled connection to the ship.
ROVs are often kept aboard vessels mounting submersible operations for several reasons; the first is safety.

 ROV Pilot Project
Using a remote operated vehicle (ROV model type: Benthos MK MiniRover System), the groundline profiles of various rope and trap configurations were filmed in three locations along the Maine coast during February and April 2003.
The ROV provided a visual image of how the rope behaved after the traps were set, as well as the relative height of the ropes from the seafloor.
Initial observations from the ROV footage imply the behavior of sink rope to be as intended, lying on or slightly above the seafloor.

A number of deep-sea animals and plants have been discovered in their natural environment using the ROV, which is also useful in locating may shipwrecks.
The country started building the submersible ROV in 1999 and has funneled 12 billion won over the past seven years finish building Herime late last year.

Many ROV’s are built by hobbyists that can accomplish some of these objectives, but they lack the structural integrity necessary to dive to 400 feet.
Commercial ROV’s that are able to dive to this depth are available but they are expensive and lack customizability.
By designing an ROV as an educational project, the ROV will be less expensive, structurally sound, and customized to meet sponsor needs.
