Topic: ROX Desktop

  Oroborus+Pogo+ROX
ROX makes this easy since, if you run ROX from the command line and give it just about any file or directory, then it will open it or launch the file as if you clicked on it in a ROX window.
An additional advantage of ROX is that all of the stuff you need to do is accessible from the right-click mouse button, even opening an xterm in the currently viewed directory.
All of the windows are minimized to the desktop (controlled by ROX), but still display useful information about their contents.

Linux.com :: ROX Desktop provides light, quirky alternative to GNOME and KDE
The ROX Desktop is a lightweight alternative to GNOME or KDE built around the ROX-Filer file manager.
The ROX Desktop opens by default with a panel on the bottom edge, and a cluster of icons on the top left of the desktop -- or "pinboard," as ROX developers prefer to call it.
The ROX Desktop is unlikely to appeal to new users, because so much of ROX-Filer's power is hidden away, and some options, such as Count (file size) are frankly likely to baffle them.

 Desktop environment (Linux Reviews)
The desktop environments for the popular proprietary operating systems Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X are, in their intended use, relatively unalterable.
The most common desktop environment on personal computers is the one provided by Microsoft Windows; another common environment is the one provided by Mac OS X. Other mainstream desktop environments for Unix-like operating systems using the X Window System include KDE, GNOME, Xfce and CDE.
The Amiga approach to desktop environment was noteworthy; the original Workbench desktop environment in AmigaOS evolved through time to originate an entire family of descendants.

All about Linux: Xfce 4.2 - A light weight window manager heavy in features.
In fact, I found out that the desktop is a separate utility which goes by the name xfdesktop and the user has the option of not running it in Xfce if he chose to.
Another aspect which endeared me to this light weight window manager cum desktop is that when you install or uninstall any software in Linux, the menus in Xfce are automatically updated to mirror the change which is a comfortable feature which is lacked by other light weight window managers including popular ones like Fluxbox.
I recommend using Rox file manager with Xfce because it is quite easy to associate file types with the applications of our choice in rox and it is blazing fast.

KDE and Gnome are complete desktop environments that consist of a large number of tightly integrated yet still separate pieces of software.

I find Fluxbox without ROX is a little too light for my tastes and ROX does not seem to slow Fluxbox down.
Rox Session and the whole Rox desktop thing was a bust, I couldn't get the desktop to fully install, I ended up with a next to useless interface.
I know that when I first installed Debian, the desktop install loaded both gnome and kde, I think it's a mistake, the installer should ask which desktop you want, describe each one a bit, allow you to choose and then install your choice.

KDE's glob system replaces GNOME's and ROX's ext/regex fields, since it is trivial to detect a pattern in the form '*.ext' and store it in an extension hash table internally.
The full power of regular expressions was not being used by either desktop, and glob patterns are more suitable for filename matching anyway.
A typical use for this would be to indicate the default handler application for a particular desktop ("Galeon is the GNOME default text/html browser").

For interoperability, it is useful for different programs to use the same database so that different programs agree on the type of a file, and new rules for determining the type apply to all programs.
Only the name-to-type and contents-to-type mappings are covered by this spec; other MIME type information, such as the default handler for a particular type, or the icon to use to display it in a file manager, are not covered since these are a matter of style.

ROX desktop in new Debian package - RISC OS News, Software and Information
The ROX desktop takes familiar user interface components from the RISC OS desktop, such as drag'n'drop and the filer, to create a more friendlier desktop for users of Unix-like operating systems.
"The ROX filer is so much more responsive than konqueror and Nautilus, ROX boots in a fraction of the time taken by the big two desktops, it consumes less than half the RAM and it requires much less in the way of disc space and libraries."
Sadly installing ROX desktop doesn't magically make all the applications have pop-up menus, support drag-and-drop loading and saving, make good use of the Adjust button, etc, so the applications will continue to be almost as horrible to use as on Windows

ROX Desktop provides light, quirky alternative to GNOME and KDE (Linux.com)
drag-and-drop into special widget to change the desktop background is a bit artifical; using gtk2 results in heavy problems for those using 8-bit locales and not ascii or utf-8 -- but that's gtk2's authors' brain damage.
It sounds like ROX Desktop is simply treating icons on the desktop as shortcuts/symlinks, instead of making it a file store in its own right - and it mimicks RISC OS in this respect.
