Computer role-playing game - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
RPG gameplay elements can be found in real-time strategy games, first-person shooters, third-person shooters, and some other types such as massively multiplayer online games.
The representation of RPG elements in first- and third-person shooters is indistinguishable from the game simply incorporating a story with cut-scenes and traditional FPS problem solving, and developments to the incorporation of the genre's usual character building (such as getting better weapons).
These graphical RPGs often based their game systems on the various DandD systems used at the time, sometimes even displaying dice rolls, but it is not uncommon for completely different systems to be borrowed or created for use as well.

Gamasutra - Features -"Remodeling RPGs for the New Millennium" [01.15.99]
For the purposes of this article, a computer RPG is a game in which character development and character interaction take precedence over other factors and where each player's experience of the story is determined by individual choice rather than designer fiat.
Any designer contemplating an RPG must take a stance with regard to all of these tools, even if that stance is to deemphasize one or more of them.
The first and, arguably, most critical decision RPG developers must make with regard to story is whether to use a branching structure or to tell a story in a more conventional, linear fashion.

Further, RPG gunners usually were accompanied by supporting snipers and machine gunners and an assistant RPG gunner carrying an assault rifle.
The moving vehicle was harder for the guerrilla RPG gunner to hit and the soldiers were able to exploit their mobility and firepower.(23) Dismounting troops to advance on guerrillas while the stationary personnel carrier provides supporting fire is a good way to lose the carrier.
When the Soviets moved through heavy vegetation in Afghanistan, they would sometimes walk a wall of high-explosive fragmentation rounds in front of the vehicles to keep the RPG gunners at bay--or at least to ruin their aim.(24) This is an expensive option in terms of artillery or mortar rounds, but it does work.

RPGFan Editorials - March 26, 2002 - Online Gaming Woes
Easily one of the most innovative magic-acquiring technique in RPGs to date, and yet one of the most often criticized, simply because gaining magic when gaining levels is an old, tired system that works and is almost universally liked.
The key formula for a nearly perfect RPG is to create a few new, innovative systems and features that set you apart from any other game while still keeping certain systems true to the original RPGs.
Likewise the key formula for creating a good RPG story is to keep intact the system that works (Hero-find heroine-slay villain-find new villain) and simply insert a unique twist when the moment arises.

 The Myths About RPGs
RPGs Teach Their Players How To Cast Spells: RPGs often have a system of magic involved, and it is usually a form of fantastical magic, far-flung from anything found in witchcraft or the occult.
There are some RPGs that have been designed to have a more "real-world" feel to them, and the authors have used actual occultic sources as their framework; nevertheless, one cannot learn how to cast spells by playing a role-playing game, any more than they can learn to swing a sword or ride a horse.
RPGs Promote Suicide: Whether by causing severe depression over the loss of a character, or as some demented way to start their life over again at the beginning, RPGs have been accused of being a possible cause of suicide among their players.

RPGamer Editorials - RPGs need stricter definitions
Although most "traditional" RPGs have swords and sorcery as their key themes, that does not mean every game with swords and sorcery is an RPG.
Likewise, swords and sorcery is not necessarily a prerequisite for an RPG.
Interactive story RPGs are a rather new concept to the world of role playing, but already the most popular RPGs being produced at this time tend to be of the interactive story type.

 A Parent's Guide To Role-Playing Games
RPGs allow you the chance to, for a time, play the "leading" roles in an adventure.
Parents who are dubious about the fantasy motif of many RPGs might find a comprimise with their gamer children by asking that they play the many, many RPGs out there which include no magic, such as Science Fiction games, mystery, or espionage games.
Some gamers go to RPGs because they are frustrated, bored, or unsatisfied with "real life." If you can find out if this is the case, you may perhaps remedy the situation.

Are story focused RPGs dying out?
I always thought of RPGs as games with a customizable character, a stat page and an inventory with a paper doll, so for me, BGandE is not trully a role-playing game.
however, i do believe that the rpg segment of the gaming market is in a dismal state presently.
a good rpg must have a combat system that is manageable and not a chore to learn, yet able to hold the interest of the gamer.

Differently from the above, however RPGs are more highly focused on the pyschological/mental intersection in such a way that they point naturally to examination of such and, in fact, encourage it in a manner that other social, leisure activities do not.
The likelihood of self-discovery/self-revelation is, honestly, higher in the RPG activity than it is in more social or physical leisures, where you can often avoid or dismiss psychological stresses or the internalization of conflicting viewpoints with your own.
