That being said, RPG's roots are from the old punch card days in the 60's, and the method of writing programs is different because of it.
I'm not aware of RPG being ported to any other systems, I'm almost 100% sure you'll be using an AS/400 for the hands on stuff through a 5250 or 3270 emulator.

 ILE RPG Considerations for DDM
Generally, DDM file names can be specified in ILE RPG programming language anywhere a database file name can be specified, for both AS/400 and non-AS/400 target systems.
If the DDM file is declared in the program to be externally described, the ILE RPG compiler copies the external descriptions of the remote file referred to into the program at compile time.
A DDM file is also valid as the file specified in the ILE RPG program that will be used implicitly in the ILE RPG logic cycle.
