  78 RPM Records
That 78 RPM record you are holding in your hand can be anywhere between 50 and 100 years old.
Using a 78 RPM stylus will allow you to play that record because the wider (than an LP) stylus touches the sides of the groove and does not reach the bottom where the debris is.
Remember that old 78 RPM records were made prior to this standard.

These records were from a local jukebox operator and part of the inventory used to stock jukeboxes along the operator's route.
The only reason this record is not graded higher is because it was in a jukebox operator's collection and MAY have been played once or twice before removed.
In order to view the record that was displayed in the picture sleeve, the operator would cut a label-sized hole in order to view the record label ESPECIALLY if the record inside was NOT the same as what was indicated on the sleeve.

Downstairs Records - "Your Steps to Music"
Added to the limitations of the shellac 78 discs was the quality of the automatic record changers of the day, which were quite mechanically challanged (mechanically poor quality), and routinely either broke the fragile 78 discs, chipped off large chunks from the outer edges or gouged out the 'hole' in the center of the disc.
Also, the RCA engineers designed the new 45 disc records to produce the least amount of distortion, by aligning the recorded tracks across the area of the disc which produced the least tonearm tracking error (thereby reducing the amount of sound distortion).
The new 45 RPM disc records would not suffer either surface or 'hole' damage, would not slip against each other while playing, would be unbreakable, would have no surface noise and would feature extended frequency range for greatly improved music quality.

History of the 45 rpm Record
The first records were on cylinders, the earliest of which were made by the inventor of the first 'Phonograph', Thomas Alva Edison in 1877.
The 78 rpm disc reigned supreme as the accepted recording medium for many years despite its tendency to break easily and the fact that longer works could not be listened to without breaks for disc changes (at 5 minute intervals for 12" discs).
It took many years for the 78 to disappear because the new vinyl records needed new equipment on which to play them, but the two new vinyl formats then were to dominate the recorded music industry until the advent of the digital compact disc (CD).

A GUIDE TO PLAYING 78 rpm RECORDS   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
It is easy to think that 78 rpm discs, with their limited acoustic range compared with modern recordings, do not require good loudspeakers.
This is because so many 78s were not recorded at exactly 78rpm: speeds of between 72 and 85 rpm are quite common, with a few higher or lower.
With acoustic records (and some very early electrics), there is little at the top end anyway and any treble boost needed is likely to be minimal, but again, adjust to taste.
