Received Pronunciation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was standard practice until around the 1950s for university students with regional accents to modify their speech to be closer to RP.
Received Pronunciation (RP) is a form of pronunciation of the English language, sometimes defined as the "educated spoken English of southeastern England." It is a dialect of English English often taught to non-native speakers, and represented in the pronunciation schemes of most British dictionaries.
RP is sometimes known as the Queen's English but recordings show that even the Queen has changed her pronunciation over the past 50 years, no longer using a [ɛ]-like vowel in words like land.

 RP English
RP has for many years epitomized the "top end of the scale" of British English and it is what English people have traditionally meant when they’ve said that someone "hasn’t got an accent." It remains that RP is often regarded as a "neutral" and often "correct" accent.
Wales (1994) also differentiates between them in saying that "conservative" RP is often spoken by the older generation, and "advanced" RP by the younger generation.
Wells (1991) has identified some characteristics of popular accents that have been resisted by RP and also some changes that have been accepted into RP.

 Received Pronunciation
RP has certainly changed in my lifetime, as anyone can verify by watching old wartime propaganda films and newsreels and listening to the way the officers spoke.
This is not to say that a regional accent should be a barrier to their ability to teach, but nonetheless RP is considered appropriate in the classroom, particularly in higher education.
That was the form known as "marked RP", which has virtually disappeared today, and has been modified even in the speech of the Queen and other members of the old aristocracy.

 Sociolinguistics of modern RP
As far as RP is concerned, the ongoing work of Fabricius (2000) shows that the younger generations of those sections of the community one would expect to be RP speakers still are RP speakers.
The point is that RP speakers have always represented a very small proportion of the population of native speakers of English in Britain.
Until relatively recently, RP had a role to play in Australian society as the accent with the highest status, and RP speakers were the people who were employed in broadcasting.

 The cockneyfication of RP?
The continued existence of RP (and indeed of what I have elsewhere termed 'near-RP'Wells, 1982: 279, 297-301) may be inferred from the observation that various popular pronunciation features of English English remain clearly outside RP and have been firmly resisted by it.
Characteristics of popular accents, resisted by RP 2.1 H-dropping is the failure to pronounce [h] in positions where RP-speakers would pronounce it: thus ["æm@] for ["hæm@] hammer, [edZ] for [hedZ] hedge, [bi"aInd] for [bI"haInd] behind, [aI "æv] for [aI "hæv] I have.
Defining RP In a discussion such as this it is important not to lose sight of the fact that accents, and more generally varieties of a language, are not objective entities so much as mental constructs.

As the address of the RP is tied to the multicast address, the RP failure management becomes more difficult, as the deployed failover or redundancy mechanisms (e.g., BSR, Anycast-RP with MSDP) cannot be used as-is. However, Anycast-RP using PIM provides equal redundancy; this described briefly in Section 6.1.
RP Redundancy A technique called "Anycast RP" is used within a PIM-SM domain to share an address and multicast state information between a set of RPs mainly for redundancy purposes.
