Amanda, 43 and single and a former Norwich High School girl, was posted to Saxa Vord in May last year after a spell at RAF Coltishall and expects to be on the island until next August.
Saxa Vord is set on the tip of Unst, the northernmost island of the Shetlands group, with a population of 700 including the RAF personnel and their families.
But despite the distance and remoteness, she’ll not be sad to return to Saxa Vord in the depths of winter, to her seat and desk at the very top of Great Britain.

The Type 93 radar in use at Saxa Vord is approaching obsolescence and has become increasingly difficult to maintain.
With the reduced threat, it is not possible to justify funding a replacement when set against the competing priorities in the Defence Programme.
RRH Saxa Vord will be placed on a Care and Maintenance basis from April 2006.

I served at RAF Saxa Vord from Jan 1992-Jul 1993.
Prior to my arrival on 28.01.92 there was a huge storm, with winds gusting over 100mph.
It is claimed (and this needs to be verified) that the anenometer broke at 170mph and that the actual winds at the summit of Saxa Vord were closer to 240mph.

Situated in Norfolk, Neatishead is the Control and Reporting Centre responsible for the Southern UK Air Defence Region.

I wonder if you are referring to the upgraded installations at RAF Benbecula, Boulmer, Buchan, Fylingdales, Neatishead, Portreath, Saxa Vord, Scampton and Staxton Wold which in fact are part of the Air Surveillance And Control System - (ASACS) Force Command.
Not mentioned but still an integral part of the ASACS(UK), are the No 1 Air Control Centre - Kirton in Lindsey and the Remote Radar Heads (RRH) of Aird on the island of Uig and RAF Brizlee Wood in Northumberland.
RAF Boulmer is also the full time NATO Control and Reporting Centre.
