RSA Factoring Challenge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The RSA Factoring Challenge is a challenge put forward by RSA Laboratories on March 18, 1991 to encourage research into computational number theory and the practical difficulty of factoring large integers.
A primary application is for choosing the key length of the RSA public-key encryption scheme.
The first RSA numbers generated, from RSA-100 to RSA-500, were labeled according to their number of decimal digits; later, however, beginning with RSA-576, binary digits are counted instead.

RSA is a public-key cryptosystem for both encryption and authentication; it was invented in 1977 by Ron Rivest, Adi Shamir, and Leonard Adleman [74].
RSA is not an alternative or replacement for DES; rather it supplements DES (or any other fast bulk encryption cipher) and is used together with DES in a secure communications environment.
An RSA digital signature is superior to a handwritten signature in that it attests to the contents of a message as well as to the identity of the signer.

RSA key generation is not provided in the SCM; rather, the SCM must depend on an external system to generate RSA key pairs for applications.
RSA key generation is a complex process and is not suitable for a hardware-only implementation.
With RSA, the SCM private key had to be generated during the manufacturing process and burned in at the factory.

There is one RSA number of length 100, one of length 110, and so on, up to one of length 500.
The RSA challenge numbers are thus tagged RSA-100, RSA-110, RSA-120,..., RSA-500.
It is expected that the RSA challenge numbers will be at least as hard, if not harder, to factor than the partition numbers of the same length.

RSA is an Internet encryption and authentication system that uses an algorithm developed in 1977 by Ron Rivest, Adi Shamir, and Leonard Adleman.
The RSA algorithm is the most commonly used encryption and authentication algorithm and is included as part of the Web browsers from Microsoft and Netscape.
Briefly, the algorithm involves multiplying two large prime numbers (a prime number is a number divisible only by that number and 1) and through additional operations deriving a set of two numbers that constitutes the public key and another set that is the private key.
