A small independent Sydney label, Festival Records, led the charge, releasing Bill Haley's "Rock Around The Clock" in Australia in 1956 after it had been turned down by the local branch of Decca Records.
Their commercial success was surpassed only by the multi-national British recording giant EMI, who dominated the charts thanks to The Beatles, The Hollies, The Byrds and the other leading 'Beat' groups on their catalogue.
The tours and recordings by these new 'Beat' groups revitalised the pop genre and spawned a rash of local imitators, but they quickly developed a vibrant and distinctive local inflection of the 60s 'beat music' craze.
