  Fairburn Ings
Fairburn Ings is a village in the county of West Yorkshire, England, near Castleford.
The word "ing" is of Old Norse origin and means "damp or marshy land", a reference to the village being flooded regularly by the River Aire.
The flooding has produced huge expanses of water which have provided perfect conditions for RSPB Fairburn Ings, a nature reserve managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), established in 1968.

Fairburn is situated on the western edge of a limestone ridge overlooking the river Aire.
It is an old village and was formerly bounded by the Al trunk road, but since 1930 two new estates have been built on the eastern side of the Al.

Thirteen species of duck, two species of geese and the mute swan are regularly found at Fairburn Ings and, although some of the pink-footed geese have been tempted to drop down to feed on the reserve, most have been using the River Aire as a navigation guide on their north westerly journey towards Scotland.
RSPB Campfield Marsh reserve, on the Solway Estuary bordering England and Scotland, is a popular pink-footed goose staging post and, over the last week, numbers have increased dramatically as the cross-country visitors drop down to rest and feed on the estuary.

A couple of miles north of Ferrybridge is Fairburn and a little west of the village is the nature reserve of Fairburn Ings.

The pools on the reserve were caused by mining subsidence, and a third of the reserve is made up of landscaped colliery spoil, which is now returning to nature.
Having only just returned to birding AND Yorkshire after far too long an absence, Fairburn is currently at the top of my list of places to explore and spend a nice long Sunday soon, so it's very encouraging to hear all about it.
