Radipole is a part of the district of Weymouth and Portland in the county of Dorset, England.
Radipole stands at the head of, and is named after, the lake, now an RSPB nature reserve, into which the River Wey flows, and which leads into Weymouth Harbour.
The parish of Radipole predates by centuries the borough of Melcombe Regis, which grew up on its wastes on an exposed spit of shingle by the sea in the 12th century.

Radipole Lake is a lake on the River Wey, now in the English coastal town of Weymouth, Dorset, once in Radipole, the village and parish of the same name.

Radipole Lake has stretches of open water but Chaffeys Lake is almost entirely marsh and scrub.

The RSPB will be re-opening some of its most popular nature reserves this Easter, following the lifting of a blanket closure of reserves during the foot and mouth crisis.
The RSPB reserves we plan to open for Easter receive around 75 per cent of our total visitors, so we are confident that we can once again provide a stimulating and enjoyable wildlife experience for our members and the public in the countryside”.
The RSPB will keep its nature reserves closed wherever there is a risk in the fight to prevent the spread of disease, although the Society will keep all its 160 sites under active review.

When the RSPB bought their farm in Cambridgeshire, they changed its name to Hope Farm, signalling that there is a better future for farmland birds if it can be demonstrated that efficient modem farming practices can allow for adequate habitat and feeding opportunities for these birds.

The first half of the path from the RSPB shop to the hide is a gravel path which is well compacted but there was a puddle every 3 or 4 yards but only an inch or so deep at the most.
The RSPB's bit of the path, where it is not boardwalk, is a very good surface.
You can reach Weymouth by train (Radipole RSPB reserve is only a 5 minute walk away!) Buses go to Radipole, Portland (the Bill only in season) and the village of Abbotsbury (daily in season).

We stayed at the RSPB viewing site for over an hour, searching the crags through the scopes provided, but unfortunately the Golden Eagles were playing hide-and-seek, so we left as the weather had closed in, and we didn't think we'd see anything in the misty rain.
It incorporates the largest remaining reedbed in NW England, with shallow lakes and fringing sedge and woodland.
Radipole is also the home of the year-round resident Cetti's Warbler (Cettia cetti), which we did manage to get a brief glimpse of, skulking low down in the reeds.

Our first stop of the day was the RSPB nature reserve at Dyffren Wood, just south of Rhayader on the A 470, but it was not very productive.
The RSPB warden's hut and several viewing scopes are located just out of the picture to the right.
We stayed at the RSPB viewing site for over an hour, searching the crags through the scopes provided, but unfortunately the Golden Eagles were playing hide & seek, so we left as the weather had closed in and we didn't think we'd see anything in the misty rain.

I am fortunate to live close to the Weymouth RSPB reserves at Radipole and Lodmoor, the Isle of Portland and the Fleet.
The main attraction has to be the headlands of the Isle`s of Portland Purbeck, not just for ease of observing the numerous sea birds that pass by, but for the impressive variety of scarce and uncommon migrants found along these peninsulas.

For safer wildfowl watching try either Rye House Marsh RSPB reserve very close to a railway station or in my neck of the woods Stockers Lake which would be in walking distance of Rickmansworth tube station.
Often in December Stockers Lake can provide views of Smew and Goosander among the more commonwaterfowl but it depends on the weather on the continent and whether numbers have moved out to find somewhere less frozen.
In the town itself, Radipole Lake has good birding for gulls and waterfowl with resident Bearded Tit and Cetti's Warbler.

Cetti's Warbler: Radipole Lake RSPB reserve in Weymouth, Dorset, is one of the easier places to see this species, I have, in the past, seen them from the Swannery car park on the immediate edge of the footpath through the reserve.
As always with skulking species, spring is probably the best time to locate them as they call loudly from the reeds and scrub.
Dartford Warbler: In Dorset, Arne RSPB, has Dartford Warbler, this reserve is well worth visiting at any time of the year, and holds a fine range of heathland species.

The lovely Wey Valley Walks pass right by the back gate at the old stone bridge across the trout river, and Radipole Lake RSPB bird sanctuary is a few minutes away.
In the village, the pretty medieval church is well worth a visit, nestled in a dip next to the manor house.
Alternatively, the walk into town passes along the shore of the big lake, through the attractive memorial gardens and tennis courts and on past the swannery.

This morning came as a bit of a shock, although it was dry and sunny, it was decidedly chilly.
Our first stop at Weymouth was at the tennis courts to look over RSPB Radipole Lake, where among the Pochard flock was a female Ferruginous Duck.
Back at Radipole, looking from the Visitor Centre and walking around the Buddleia walk there were Teal, Shelduck, Shoveler, Snipe, Black-tailed Godwits, and a Chiffchaff.
