Sandwell is a metropolitan borough in the West Midlands of England.
West Bromwich is the largest town in Sandwell, however due to the rivalry between West Bromwich and Smethwick (former centres of West Bromwich and Warley respectively) the council headquarters are based in Oldbury.
Sandwell borders the Metropolitan Borough of Dudley to the south, the Metropolitan Borough of Walsall to the north, and the City of Birmingham to the east.

RSPB Sandwell Valley is a nature reserve, run by the RSPB, in Sandwell Valley, on the River Tame in the middle of the urban conurbation between Birmingham and West Bromwich in the West Midlands of England.
It is adjacent to, and shares its main lake with, Sandwell Valley Country Park.

The main area of interest to birders lies to the east of the motorway and is made up of the Sandwell Valley RSPB reserve and the adjacent country park owned by Sandwell Council.

The first deer recorded in Sandwell Valley, a muntjac, has been seen in the paddock in front of Sandwell Park Farm.
If you think you've seen a small parrot in Sandwell Valley, you probably have, as we now have ring necked parakeets living wild in the area, where they are regular visitors to the RSPB feeding station.

Also i'm going to the coomes valley at the end of August after wood warbler, spotted and pied fly catcher, i've been told that the reserve is very overgrown and i probably won't see them, though it's still worth a try.
Finally, the birders i met at Sandwell usually go in the car to somewhere evry thursday and it looks as though i'm going toi be going out with them a few times so i'm happy about that.
Thanks for the info but i already know that they are present at Sandwell Valley during the winter so i will be visiting it often to get them.

Most pairs are on the RSPB island and marsh but one pair have nested on the recently cleared north island.
Close up views were also the theme of the day at the RSPB on the 18th when local ringers set up mist nets on the reserve.
It was most obvious on the small islands in the RSPB Marsh but as the water level has risen and covered these it has been seen more in the scrape and edges.

Volunteer Grainne Greene Sandwell Valley RSPB's annual Dawn Chorus event takes place on Saturday May 8 and bird fans and wardens will be on the look out for feathered friends from around 4am.
The event costs £3.50 for adults, £2.50 for RSPB Members and £2 for children and concessions £2.

I'm glad to hear there are cuckoos at Sandwell - I'll pop up later in the week and look for them.
I saw the first this year at Old Hall Marshes, Essex back in May and was then fortunate to see 3 together (!) at RSPB Lakenheath Marshes last Saturday while trying to find the elusive Golden Orioles.
The cuckoos were calling from all the plantations and then suddenly one came across the marshes and sat in a tree about 50 yards from me. As I approached another 2 flew our of the trees and then all 3 disappeared into the plantation.

i am a vol at rspb sandwell valley and on tuesday whilst litter picking i did some birding too and was rewarded with my first willow warbler and whitethroat of the spring!
However, we only started visiting RSPB reserves about a year ago - before then we were only garden bird watchers, so we have a lot to learn!
Purely coincidentally, I too went to my local nature reserve this last Tuesday (though I have been several times before).

Visiting groups included several RSPB Members' Groups and Bird Clubs, local Women's Institutes, Wildlife Clubs, Gardening Clubs, local Guide and Cub groups.
Discussions with Westbury Homes have guaranteed that site work and future occupancy will not interfere with the hedgerows, with a permanent fence put up around the site.
Two highlights of the year organised by the Friends were a social evening and barbecue at the Pits and a visit to Sandwell Valley RSPB reserve, where we were made very welcome and gleaned some useful and interesting information from a site similar to Paxton Pits.
