Topic: RSS Enclosures

RSS enclosure - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
RSS enclosures are a way of attaching multimedia content to RSS feeds by providing the URL of a file associated with an entry, such as an MP3 file to a music recommendation or a photo to a diary entry.
Unlike e-mail attachments, enclosures are merely hyperlinks to files, the actual data is not embedded into the feed.
The addition of enclosures to RSS, as first implemented by Dave Winer in late 2000 [1], was an important prerequisite for the emergence of podcasting, arguably the most common use of the feature as of 2006.

How to support enclosures in aggregators   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
RSS 2.0 has a neat feature that allows an item to have an enclosure.
Like the enclosure of an email message, an RSS item enclosure is something big that may take a long time to download, or something binary that isn't text you read.
The aggregator or news readers should not download the enclosure until the computer is idle, and should not present the item with the enclosure to the user until the enclosure has been downloaded and is resident on the local hard disk.

RSS enclosures not working for mp3 files on alpha5 « WordPress Support
The only way i had to make it add an enclosure tag was to manually add an "enclosure" custom field with the url as the value, but obviously it didn't add the length of the file referenced, nor the mime-type.
Also, since the enclosure tags are added to the RSS feed by looking at the wp_postmeta table, i kept having a look at it and never got ever added to it (except when i added the custom field myself).
The mime-type, incidentally, is audio/mpeg; since the enclosure is considered only for audio/*, video/* and image/* mime-types, that should be fine.

The RSS enclosure element is used to attach media (such as video) to a news item.
The original design of enclosures was to enable downloading media attached to news feeds while the computer wasn't in use - for example, downloading MP3s while you sleep - so you wouldn't have to wait.
If you read a news item that was just retrieved by your aggregator, you probably want to see the enclosure right then and there rather than wait for it to be downloaded when the computer is idle.
