RTD Elements and RTD Probes - Resistance Temperature Detection Sensors(RTDS)
Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTD), as the name implies, are sensors used to measure temperature by correlating the resistance of the RTD element with temperature.
RTDs are also relatively immune to electrical noise and therefore well suited for temperature measurement in industrial environments, especially around motors, generators and other high voltage equipment.
The standard RTD elements used in OMEGA’s probe assemblies are made of 99.99% pure platinum wire wound about a ceramic or glass core and hermetically sealed within a ceramic or glass capsule.

instruNet RTD Temperature Measurement Hardware & Software for precision RTD
The voltage across the RTD is measured between a pair of instruNet Vin+ and Vin- input terminals while the excitation voltage for the divider is supplied by the instruNet Vout terminal.
Alpha is the temperature coefficient of the RTD at 0C (typically.00385 for American RTD's, and.00392 for European RTD's) and delta is the Callendar-Van Dusen delta constant (typically 1.492).
The voltage across the RTD would vary from 22mV to 352mV as the resistance across the RTD changed from 25 to 400 ohms (corresponding to a temperature change of -260 to +850 Celsius); therefore, an input Voltage Range of ±600mV would be ideal with a 100 ohm RTD, 4.5V Vout voltage, and 5000 ohm resistor.

RTD probes provide one of the most accurate methods of temperature measurement in industry today.
All MTI RTD elements are made with pure platinum wire and high purity ceramic components.
MTI manufactures RTD's throughout a broad range of temperatures (-200 to 630 C) to provide an accurate and repeatable method of temperature measurement.

Resistance Temperature Detector (RTD) - Engineers Edge   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
RTD elements are normally constructed of platinum, copper, or nickel.
These metals are best suited for RTD applications because of their linear resistance-temperature characteristics (as shown in Figure 1), their high coefficient of resistance, and their ability to withstand repeated temperature cycles.
RTD elements are usually long, spring-like wires surrounded by an insulator and enclosed in a sheath of metal.

 RTD's
RTD's function as a result of increasing resistance in proportion to increasing temperature: i.e., with a known current, as temperature increases, voltage increases.
The platinum RTD element is manufactured to have a set resistance at 0° C; however, once incorporated into an instrument loop, the lead resistance of the loop must be compensated for in order to achieve an actual temperature reading.
The most commonly used RTD is the 3-wire probe, which allows for the compensation of loop resistance by introducing a third wire, known as a reference wire, that is equal in length and size to the two wires connecting the RTD to the readout device.

About Resistance Temperature Detectors, RTDs, PRTs, PRT100. SPRTs and Copper, Nickel and Other
Resistance Temperature Detectors or RTDs for short, are wire wound and thin film devices that measure temperature because of the physical principle of the positive temperature coefficient of electrical resistance of metals.
RTDs, as mentioned above, work in a relatively small temperature domain, compared to thermocouples, typically from about -200 °C to a practical maximum of about 650 to 700 °C. Some makers claim wider ranges and some construction designs are limited to only a small portion of the usual range.
RTDs can be made cheaply in Copper and Nickel, but the latter have restricted ranges because of non-linearities and wire oxidation problems in the case of Copper.

 Accu-Ohm RTD's
Stability and repeatability: The platinum RTD is the primary interpolation instrument used by the National Institute of Standards and Technology from -260 degrees Celsius to 630 degrees Celsius.
Their accuracy is also very good because of the RTD's repeatability over the standard temperature scale from -260ºC to 630ºC. Ordinary industrial RTD's tend to show a drift of less than 0.1ºC per year in normal use.
Because RTD's are exactly what the name implies (Resistance Temperature Detector), a resistance type sensor, any resistance introduced by the addition of extension wires between the RTD and the control or measuring instrument will add to the readings.

 Sensors RTD’s
Resistance Temperature Detectors are sensors that measure temperature by correlating the resistance of the RTD element with temperature.
The RTD element is constructed from a pure material, the resistance of which, at various temperatures, has been documented by various international standards institutes.
RTDs also provide high immunity to electrical noise and are, therefore, well suited for applications in process and industrial automation environments, especially around motors, generators and other high voltage equipment.
