  Radio Broadcasting in France
Radio in the twenties was an amateur hobby, a new toy for the technophiles and a source of entertainment for about half a million people (as web radio is now), before turning into a mass leisure activity in the 1930s.
The deregulation of radio was extended when the state gave up its interest in the "périphériques": Europe 1 was sold off to Matra-Hachette in 1986 and RTL gained its independence of the state when Havas was privatised in 1987.
State radio, under unaccustomed pressure from FM radios, as the radio audience was being fragmented over a huge number of new stations, reacted to the new competition.
