RTL originally stood for Radio Télévision Luxembourg (in French) or Radio Télé Luxemburg (in German).
The RTL Group started in 1931 as CLR or Compagnie Luxembourgeoise de Radiodiffusion which operated Radio Luxembourg.
In 2000 it merged with Pearson TV and became RTL Group, which also allowed it to enter the prestigious American broadcast market.

MUMBAI: RTL Group and Canal+ Group, a subsidiary of Vivendi Universal have concluded an agreement concerning the sale of their interests in sports rights firm Sportfive to Advent International.
Under the terms of the deal Advent International, a private equity fund, and RTL Group will set up a new company that will purchase all the shares of Sportfive held by RTL Group (46.4 per cent) and Canal+ Group (46.4 per cent).
Advent International is expected to hold 75 per cent of the new company and RTL Group the remaining 25 per cent.

On Friday, Germany’s Handelsblatt announced that RTL Group intended to purchase 49.99 percent of Ren TV, for about €100 million ($131 million) by May 2005.
As much as 70 percent of the channel is owned by the subsidiary of RAO UES Center of Assets Optimization, and 30 percent are owned by Irena Lesnevskaya and her son Dmitry, who ocupy the posts of president and general director in Ren TV.
Handelsblatt has information that RTL Group plans to purchase 49.99 percent of Ren TV for $131 million – a more adequate price – which will make the cost of the whole channel amount to about $260 million.
