RTP: Some Frequently Asked Questions about RTP
RTP provides functionality suited for carrying real-time content, e.g., a timestamp and control mechanisms for synchronizing different streams with timing properties.
RTP does not contain a length field, that is, it assumes that framing is performed by the underlying protocol and that only one RTP packet is to be carried in one PDU of the underlying protocol.
RTP (in particular, the data part) is tightly coupled to the application, so that a kernel implementation makes little sense.

 RFC 3550 (rfc3550) - RTP: A Transport Protocol for Real-Time Applications
All participants in an RTP session may share a common destination transport address pair, as in the case of IP multicast, or the pairs may be different for each participant, as in the case of individual unicast network addresses and port pairs.
Instead, for each medium the RTP timestamp is related to the sampling instant by pairing it with a timestamp from a reference clock (wallclock) that represents the time when the data corresponding to the RTP timestamp was sampled.
RTP Control Protocol -- RTCP The RTP control protocol (RTCP) is based on the periodic transmission of control packets to all participants in the session, using the same distribution mechanism as the data packets.

RFC 1889 (rfc1889) - RTP: A Transport Protocol for Real-Time Applications   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
If RTP packets are to be carried in an underlying protocol that provides the abstraction of a continuous octet stream rather than messages (packets), an encapsulation of the RTP packets must be defined to provide a framing mechanism.
RTP data header additions: Additional fields may be appended to the fixed RTP data header if some additional functionality is required across the profile's class of applications independent of payload type (Section 5.3).
RTP data header extensions: The contents of the first 16 bits of the RTP data header extension structure must be defined if use of that mechanism is to be allowed under the profile for implementation-specific extensions (Section 5.3.1).

RFC 1889 RTP January 1996 All header data is aligned to its natural length, i.e., 16-bit fields are aligned on even offsets, 32-bit fields are aligned at offsets divisible by four, etc. Octets designated as padding have the value zero.
RFC 1889 RTP January 1996 5.3 Profile-Specific Modifications to the RTP Header The existing RTP data packet header is believed to be complete for the set of functions required in common across all the application classes that RTP might support.
RFC 1889 RTP January 1996 The format of the receiver report (RR) packet is the same as that of the SR packet except that the packet type field contains the constant 201 and the five words of sender information are omitted (these are the NTP and RTP timestamps and sender's packet and octet counts).

 RFC 2190 (rfc2190)
RTP is defined by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) to provide end-to-end network transport functions suitable for applications transmitting real-time data over multicast or unicast network services.
Zhu Standards Track [Page 4] RFC 2190 RTP Payload Format for H.263 Video Streams September 1997 3.4 Macroblock Address As specified by H.261, a macroblock address (MBA) is encoded with a variable length code to indicate the position of a macroblock within a group of MBs in H.261 bitstreams.
For H.263 video streams, the RTP timestamp is based on a 90 kHz clock, the same as the RTP timestamp for H.261 video streams [5].

Real-Time Transport Protocol - a Whatis.com definition - see also: RTP   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
RTP does not in itself guarantee real-time delivery of multimedia data (since this is dependent on network characteristics); it does, however, provide the wherewithal to manage the data as it arrives to best effect.
Information in the RTP header tells the receiver how to reconstruct the data and describes how the codec bit streams are packetized.
Compressed RTP (CRTP), specified in RFC 2509, was developed to decrease the size of the IP, UDP, and RTP headers.

 RTP - voip-info.org
RTP is able to carry media identified by parameters registred by the Internet assigned numbers authority, IANA.
If one of the parties involved in the session is on a private IP address, that stream from the public client to the NAT box, will not be allowed to reach the client on the inside of the NAT.
To handle this, Symmetric RTP is often used.

[RFC3551] RTP Payload Format MIME types ============================= In addition to the RTP payload formats (encodings) listed in the RTP Payload Types table, there are additional payload formats that do not have static RTP payload types assigned but instead use dynamic payload type number assignment.
In addition, for the payload formats listed in the RTP Payload Types table above, the "encoding name" is also registered as a MIME subtype under the media type "audio" or "video".
RTP SDES item types =================== The RFC "RTP: A Transport Protocol for Real-Time Applications" [RFC3550] specifies an initial set of "item types" for the RTCP SDES control packet.
