I initially operated RTTY using AFSK with a Rigblaster Nomic interface to an Icom IC-756 Pro transceiver.
Using AFSK meant that I could not use the Icom's RTTY filters and QRM during contesting meant that I generally operated rather high in the RTTY sub-bands.
Running FSK I was able at long last to use the Icom's RTTY filters (5 of them - 1 kHz, 500Hz, 350 Hz, 300 Hz and 250 Hz) along with the wonderful Twin APF filter which literally brought RTTY signals out of the noise.

Getting Started on RTTY - Introduction
RTTY is the most fun I've had in over 30 years of Amateur radio.
Every program I know for RTTY includes special "buffers" which hold pre-typed messages that can be sent by pressing a function key or clicking a button on your screen with a mouse.
RTTY is Baudot code (see http://chem.ch.huji.ac.il/~eugeniik/history/baudot.html for excellent information on Mr.

Following the band plans and operating RTTY only on the portions of the bands designated for that type of operation is a good idea.
The three common speeds for 10 meter Baudot RTTY communications are 60 wpm (45 bauds), 75 wpm (56 bauds), and 100 wpm (75 bauds).
Some RTTY operators have modified their transceivers to use the CW filter by adding a switch so it is possible to select the CW filter with the mode switch set for SSB operation.

With the "Reverse/Normal" button on Normal, "mark" is the higher RTTY tone; in Reverse "space" is the higher tone.
The transmitter is left on and continuous sequence of "Letter shift" characters (in RTTY mode) or another idle characters is transmitted.
Take into consideration that when you select RTTY or AMTOR mode via the "Mode" menu, speed and shift are reset to the default values 45 Baud/170 Hz and 100 Baud/170 Hz respectively.

The purpose of the RTTY Rangers was to interest & activate more worthy RDXA members in digital contesting.
Any station hearing a RTTY Ranger is requested to QRX, QSY or QRT until completion of their inevitable 599 contact.
The HF RTTY sub-band boundaries are not written in stone.  This is particularly true during RTTY contests.  Below are approximations of "normal" operating RTTY sub-bands.

 RTTY Contesting
RTTY SO2R operation is easier for the operator to pick-up and become proficient in than SO2R in the other modes.
RTTY software must be compatible with the contest logging software you intend to use and vice versa.
RTTY contest messages may seem long, e.g., “K4GMH TU 599 003 003(CR)” would be a typical response when the other station, who answered your CQ, is sending his report to you.

RTTY didn't have the error-free copy of the handshaking modes, and you certainly could not swap binary files using its limited code.
When it comes to RTTY we're still dealing with binary data (dits and dahs, if you will), but instead of on/off keying, we send the information by shifting frequencies.

Radioteletype - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
RTTY uses a variety of different modulation methods, of which frequency shift keying is the most common.
RTTY is extremely slow by modern standards; a typical baud rate for RTTY operation was 45 baud (approximately 60 words per minute).
RTTY systems are also fielded by amateur radio operators, and are popular for long-distance contacts

RTTY or RadioTeletype is a direct machine to machine communications mode using the Baudot (or Murray) code.
This pattern is chosen as it produces the most frequent and almost symmetrical alternation of Mark and Space tones, giving the receiving operator the best chance to tune the receiver before the "real" message starts.
It is quite possible to lose bits here and there when receiving a RTTY signal, whether it be because of fading, interference, frequency drift, or whatever.

 RTTY Terminal
This heavy-duty RTTY terminal unit was manufactured and distributed by Radio Wholesale in the 80's and early 90's.
Originally they were mounted in gray Ten-Tec cabinets, but because most of the ham radio RTTY stations used Drake twins as stations, several "special order" units were manufactured and mounted in Drake R-4C cabinets to match those stations.
RTTY Terminal Units are noted for reliability and were used in many commercial RTTY circuits over the years

RTTY stands for "Radio Teletype" and is a method of sending Teletype text over amateur radio.
Multiple collections are represented here, coming from different sources, but it must be made clear that this artwork is the result of hundreds of Hams around the world, transcribing already-existent typewriter art or creating new works by themselves, then transmitting them around.
Some of these date back definitively to the 40s, with many of them showing up in the 60s, 70s and 80s and crossing over to Bulletin Board Systems, often with the credits stripped, and traded by BBS users who were often unaware of the years/decades of heritage the files had before the BBS was created.

If all this works, you should be able to tune to an RTTY signal and see it in the TNC window.
There are two aspects of RTTY that are different from CW, and affect how you program the memories.
The first difference is that when there is no signal, the other station's TNC will probably convert random noise into random characters, or "garble." To separate your message clearly from the garble, it's a good idea to start and end your messages with a space or two, or even a carriage return.
