Rational Unified Process - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
While the RUP encompasses a large number of different activities, it is also intended to be tailored, in the sense of selecting the development processes appropriate to a particular software project or development organization.
Adopting RUP was once thought to be expensive, however with an increase of knowledge over the years and the Object Management Group's adoption of the Unified Process (RUP without the document templates) this misunderstanding has been debunked.
RUP was not intended, not envisioned and not promoted to be used straight "out of the box." This confusion has led to RUP being branded as a weighty and expensive process; which has been proven inaccurate.

RUP is an odd hybrid of waterfall and agile.

Kruchten explains the interconnected concepts around which the RUP framework is organized — process roles that people take, activities and steps each role performs, artifacts that activities operate on, guidance for roles, activities and artifacts, and organization of all these into a discipline.

RUP is obviously trying to get UI Design involved up front, to avoid the issue with BA's or SA's writing the requirements in isolation.
Specifically, the RUP states that internal actions that the system performs are not part of the use case, but instead provide an observable result to *an actor*.
RUP does not define such detail, that is left to the implementation.

Cooper: The Rational Unified Process and Goal-Directed Design
The way RUP (and other “agile”; development philosophies) deals with this disturbing fact is to accept it (however unfortunate it may be) and to optimize development practices around managing and responding to change.
RUP defines a Use Case as “a sequence of actions a system performs that yields a valuable result for a particular actor.” These Use Cases serve to determine functional requirements, to create and validate the design, and to create test plans and user documentation in ways similar to Goal-Directed Design’s use of scenarios.
In RUP, the bulk of upfront, proactive design work occurs in the Elaboration phase, where the problem domain is analyzed, Use Cases are identified and fleshed-out, high-level requirements are defined, and system architecture is determined and prototyped.

Agile Modeling and the Rational Unified Process (RUP)
The AUP is a subset of the RUP and the EUP a superset of the it.
They had adopted the RUP and wanted to tailor it with Enterprise Management concepts from the EUP, in particular they wanted to ensure that the Inception phase and Elaboration phase efforts of individual projects were supported by enterprise-level requirements, architecture, and reuse efforts.
At the beginning go the project we tailored the RUP with the practices of AM and a portion of the EUP, the end result of which was the creation of something the RUP calls a development case.

What is RUP? - A Word Definition From the Webopedia Computer Dictionary   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-07)
Based on UML, RUP organizes the development of software into four phases, each consisting of one or more executable iterations of the software at that stage of development.
This stage is important to the RUP because it is here that developers analyze the risks associated with changing the scope of the project or adding new technologies along the way.
RUP is similar in concept to Extreme Programming in that only what is useful and required is produced and the development plan is updated throughout the process.

Dennis van der Stelt : Agile vs. RUP
I think RUP is great, but you have to have experienced people doing RUP projects as you don't want to overload everyone with documentation, but also have to carefully look at what the customer wants.
RUP also uses iterations, but for some reason I have the feeling Agile development can better understand and react to what the customers needs, not what he thinks he wants.

The RUP requires that we create an “executable architecture.” This means that not only must we create our paper architecture, we must then prove that it works by selecting the highest risk requirements for the system, implementing them, and testing that they work correctly using the selected architecture.

 The Ten Essentials of RUP
For those of you who are unfamiliar with RUP, this diagram represents the incremental and iterative nature of the Rational Unified Process, which covers a vast array of disciplines within the software development lifecycle, including artifacts, guidelines, team member roles, and activities.
The essence of the Implementation and Test workflows in RUP is to incrementally code, build, and test system components throughout the project lifecycle, producing executable releases at the end of each iteration after inception.
The "essence" of RUP's Configuration and Change Management Workflow is to manage and control the scope of the project as changes occur throughout the project lifecycle.

 Data and the RUP
The RUP lifecycle is based on four consecutive phases (the EUP adds two more so as to cover the entire system lifecycle, not just development).
The fact that there are four serial phases can often motivate traditional developers to believe that the RUP is similar to the serial processes that they are familiar to.
In the RUP development proceeds in iterations, typically several weeks in length, during which a subset of the requirements are implemented.

The problem is that the RUP doesn't have much to say when it comes to reuse.
