The Trimaran Warship Technology Demonstrator RV Triton is three-hulled 90-metre vessel designed by the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency (DERA) and the latest tests on the ship have seen her engaged in a series of Naval evolutions off the South West coast.
Triton, built by Vosper Thornycroft and fitted out in Rosyth last year, is jointly funded by DERA and the US Government, which contributed £5 million of the £13 million needed to design and build the ship.
Research on RV Triton is due to continue until the summer of 2002 when the data will be made available to shipbuilders interested in putting forward designs for the Future Surface Combatant.

Navy News - News Desk - News - Trimaran warship takes to the water   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-10)
More than 300 sensors fitted to the vessel to record the strains on her when she is operational were all working at the launch, giving them a unique insight into the stresses which hulls endure when ships enter the water for the first time.
Triton was built using the very latest in ship-building philosophy, including the construction of five megablocks (weighing up to 200 tonnes each) and pre-outfitted cabin modules which were then fitted together.
If trials with Triton are successful, DERA believes that the first Trimaran warships could enter service as early as 2010, at the same time as the RN's new 40,000 tonne aircraft carriers.
