Raasay (Scottish Gaelic: Ratharsair) is an island between the Isle of Skye and the mainland of Scotland.
Raasay is home to the Raasay vole (Clethrionomys glareolus erica), a subspecies of Bank Vole, which is darker and heavier than the mainland variety and found nowhere else in the world.
Raasay was ruled by the MacLeods from 1518; their initial stronghold being Brochel Castle.

Raasay Sound has a depth varying from 78 to 87 fathoms, and the Inner Sound is 77 fathoms at the S end, 130 off Brochel Bay, and 138 (the greatest depth) opposite the S end of Rona.
Raasay and the adjacent islands belonged for about 500 years to the Macleods of Raasay, cadets of the Macleods of Lewis, often known as M `Gilliecallum of Raasay, and it was by one of this family that Dr Johnson and Boswell were so hospitably entertained in 1773.
Raasay was, however, among the many proprietors ruined in the destitution crisis of 1846, and the estate passed into the hands of Mr Rainy, who cleared a considerable portion of the crofter population in order to lay out sheep farms.

When one alights at Raasay, the first thing which the visitor sees is an unsightly industrial ruin, but don't let it put you off visiting.

The path follows the route of an old incline railway running to Raasay iron ore mine; the mine and railway closed early in the twentieth century and today the route makes an excellent footpath up the moor, with great views back across to the Red Hills on Skye.
Boswell climbed up to the top of Dun Caan during his tour of the Hebrides with Johnson (who remained down in Raasay House, visited later on this walk); he was so delighted with the view that he danced a jig on the summit.
You'll soon reach the front of the extremely grand Raasay House which today houses an outdoor centre, and an excellent cafe.
