He joined the French army in 1937, where he server with distinction in World war II, and later on awarded the Croix de Guerre and the Médaille Militaire.
In 1954 he joined other revolutionaries to form the FLN, and with 8 other leaders (Krim Belkacem, Hocine Aït Ahmed, Mohammed Khider, Mostefa Ben Boulaïd, Larbi Ben Mhidi, Rabah Bitat, Mohammed Boudiaf and Didouche Mourad) decided for the armed struggle against the French.
His capture and imprisonment from 1956 to 1962 kept him out of the most active phase of the war for independence.

On October 22, 1956, these three plus Mohamed Boudiaf and Moustapha Lacheraf were flying from Rabat, Morocco to Tunis when a French Air Force aircraft forced them to land at Oran.

The ALN commanders and the GPRA struggled for power, including an unsuccessful attempt to dismiss Colonel Houari Boumediene, chief of staff of the ALN in Morocco.
Boumediene formed an alliance with Ben Bella, who together with Khider and Bitat, announced the formation of the Political Bureau (Bureau Politique) as a rival government to the GPRA, which had installed itself in Algiers as the Provisional Executive.
Boumediene's forces entered Algiers in September, where he was joined by Ben Bella, who quickly consolidated his power.
