Malta's proximity to the Suez Canal proved to be its main asset during these years, and it was considered to be a most important stop on the way to India.
Under its 1964 constitution, Malta initially retained Queen Elizabeth II as sovereign of Malta, with a Governor-General exercising executive authority on her behalf, but on December 13, 1974 it became a republic within the Commonwealth, with the President as head of state.
Malta and Tunisia are currently discussing the commercial exploitation of the continental shelf between their countries, particularly for petroleum exploration.

 Rabat
The Dominican friars came to Malta in 1450 and built their first friary at Rabat over a cave where according to tradition the Virgin Mary had spoken to a sportsman who had taken refuge there.
The Conventual Franciscans came to Malta before the year 1347 and built their church and friary near the hospital of St. Francis, which later on came to be known as Santo Spirito hospital.
The friary was demolished in 1551 because of a Turkish attack on Mdina.
