Urban Legends Reference Pages: Pregnancy (The Rabbit Test)
The origins of the "rabbit test" lie with the discovery in the 1920s that a woman starts producing a hormone known as human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) shortly after a fertilized egg implants itself in the uterine wall.
Thus the "rabbit test" was born, and with it the misconception that the rabbit's death was an indicator of a positive result.
Later refinements to the test enabled clinicians to inspect the ovaries without having to kill the rabbits first, but as the example cited above demonstrates, the misconception that the test rabbit died only if the woman was pregnant is still with us today, even though the "rabbit test" itself is not.

Rabbit test - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The rabbit test was an early pregnancy test developed in 1927.
The rabbit test became a widely used bioassay (animal-based test) to test for pregnancy.
This led to the phrase "the rabbit died" being used as a euphemism for a positive pregnancy test.

Wordwizard Clubhouse - the rabbit is dead   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Jan, I haven’t heard it around much lately, but it was not too long ago that the RABBIT TEST and the THE RABBIT IS DEAD (or THE RABBIT DIED) were commonly used expressions for ‘a pregnancy test’ and the ‘the test is positive — you’re pregnant’ (‘viola you’re pregnant’ (<:) — see up the duff).
The RABBIT TEST, which was developed in 1927, actually was commonly used to test for pregnancy until fairly recently.
However, the rabbit wouldn’t die as a result of the injection, which was the common implication, but because it had to be killed and dissected so that the folks in the laboratory could examine its ovaries.

Rabbit Test (1978) - Overview - MSN Movies
Although Rabbit Test has gained a certain cult reputation over the years, it's a "so-bad-it-must-be-seen" cult following.
There really is no plot to Rabbit Test, only a premise, which is used as an excuse for screenwriter/director Joan Rivers to hang jokes upon.
Many will find most of these jokes extremely offensive, but their real crime is not that they are in bad taste but they simply are not funny.

 Rabbit Test Review (1978)
All the fuss resolves itself in a parody of the Nativity, ensuring that Rivers has cheerfully offended just about everybody by the end - you can't say she's not consistent in aiming for her targets.
Not as awful as its reputation as a bad movie classic, Rabbit Test has enough funny bits for those with a strong sense of humour and who don't care about political correctness, because this film certainly doesn't.
The seventies were a strange time judging by this.
