In the News (Sun 27 Dec 09)

  Rabbitfishes
Rabbitfishes are almost all marine (one species is brackish), ranging widely in the tropical Indo-Pacific and eastern Mediterranean in shallow lagoons.
Rabbitfishes are one of my exceptions to the general rule of quarantine; most are clean and ready to go with just a preventative freshwater dip.
Rabbitfishes are not to be trusted with non-fishes as their grazing habits often extend to macro-algae, and invertebrates of all kinds.

Siganus guttatus is one of 27 species of rabbitfishes in the Family Siganidae, distinguished by a large number of poisonous fin spines - 13 in the dorsal, 7 in the anal, and 2 in the pelvic fins.
Rabbitfishes are marine fishes widely distributed in the neritic zone of the tropical Indo-Pacific from east Africa and the Red Sea to French Polynesia, with the most species in the Indo-Malayan region.
Rabbitfishes spawn around reefs and seagrass-seaweed beds, the eggs 0.5-0.6 mm in diameter, demersal, and adhesive, and the larvae pelagic and 1.5 mm long at hatching.

Rabbitfish (Family: Siginidae) are amongst the most commercially important fish species in the Southern Mediterranean, Arabian Gulf and Indo-Pacific regions.
A project was recently undertaken at the Bribie Island Aquaculture Research Centre (BIARC) to optimise larval rearing techniques for the rabbitfish, Siganus nebulosus (Figure 1).
Around 10 000 rabbitfish larvae were placed in 1000 litre tanks six hours after hatch.

 Evolution: Survival: Coral Reef Connections
Goldlined rabbitfish (Siganus lineatus), locally called spine-feet fish, are so named for the defensive venomous spines at the ends of each of their pelvic fins.
To avoid being thrust into a risky spine-to-fang battle, rabbitfish employ their expert color-changing talents to avoid predator detection in the first place.
Schools of rabbitfish thus provide an excellent refuge for their poorly defended relatives, the parrotfish.

A total of 1142 rabbitfish were examined over a 3 yr period from inside mariculture net cages, from the cage surroundings and from several sites along the coast.
Overall prevalence levels of 50% were recorded in the rabbitfish sampled inside the net cages and 39 % at the cages' close surroundings, 21% at a sandy beach site 1.2 km westwards, 35% at Eilat harbour 3 km to the south and 42% at a coral reef site about 10 km south of the cages.
marinum isolates from rabbitfish captured at Eilat harbour and the coral reef site were shown by 16S rDNA sequencing analysis to be identical to isolates from rabbitfish trapped inside the mariculture cages as well as isolates from locally cultured sea bass D.

Rabbitfishes aren't among those fishes most likely to have/contract/transmit ick, so hopefully everything will be OK. The horse is out of the barn now anyway, there's no going back, is there?> I guess I am just seeking reassurance besides what I read on WetWebMedia.
Some Rabbitfish will tolerate others of their own kind or relatives, while the Foxface end of the family (Lo, vulpinus, Fiji) tend to be aggressive toward the rest and often need to be the ONLY member of the genus kept in a tank lest an all out war erupt.
Some of the other Rabbitfish can be kept in groups, but the Lo will definitely attack conspecifics as it grows, and other family members as well.

The bad news is that while I've made significant improvement in patience over the last several years thanks to reef keeping, situations such as these still arise and I realize there is still much work to do.
