Learn more about Race in the online encyclopedia.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Race is a type of classification used to group living things based on such elements as common descent, heredity, physical attributes, behavior, economic and academic achievement, and language.
Although the term is sometimes applied to the entire human population ("the human race"), this article is primarily concerned with "race" as the term has been used to designate groups of humans, whether or not the groups are mutually exclusive, and whether or not the classification purports to be objective.
The historical definition of race, before the development of evolutionary biology, was that of common lineage, a vague concept interchangeable with species, breed, cultural origin, or national character ("The whole race of mankind." --Shakespeare; "Whence the long race of Alban fathers come" --Dryden).

Conceptions of race, as well as specific racial groupings, vary by culture and over time and are often controversial, for scientific reasons as well as their impact on social identity and identity politics.
In the face of these issues, some evolutionary scientists have simply abandoned the concept of race in favor of "population." What distinguishes population from previous groupings of humans by race is that it refers to a breeding population (essential to genetic calculations) and not to a biological taxon.
Race "connotes geographic ancestry, by continent or large continental subregion" and "is used to denote continental or subcontinental clades".

 Cox & Forkum: Race Baiting
NASCAR said it was "outrageous" that "Dateline NBC" targeted one of its race tracks last weekend for a possible segment on anti-Muslim sentiment in the United States.
NASCAR said NBC confirmed it was sending Muslim-looking men to a race, along with a camera crew to film fans' reactions.
The obvious intent by NBC was to evoke reaction, and we are confident our fans won't take the bait," he said.

Is the Korean Media Race Baiting the Virginia Tech Tragedy? at ROK Drop
But the moment the culprit was identified as a Korean it became a race incident.
What the Korean media is missing in all of this is that no where in the US media have I seen any evidence suggesting that the US public is holding Koreans accountable for the actions of one crazy man. Everyone in the US media is now considering this guy to be a mentally disturbed person.
Cho was nuts, but Park appears to be a race baiter and he probably doesn’t even know it.

Ari Melber: Lieberman-Lamont Race Gets Fierce, From Race Baiting to National Security - Politics on The Huffington Post
Ned Lamont surged ahead of Joe Lieberman by 13 points in today's Quinnipiac University poll, and the race has been getting fierce, with the campaigns sparring over everything from race-baiting to the Democratic Party's national security reputation.
Of course, while this all may be interesting to politicos, most Connecticut voters are probably not calculating how this race may affect the party's national security reputation, or whether the candidates should be held responsible for their associates' political statements (be it Jane Hamsher or Sean Hannity).
And on a final, parochial note, this is probably the first major Senate race where Huffington Post provided groundbreaking coverage, opinion and participation, from bloggers to readers.

The issue of race is again being raised in the race for governor - but Kinky Friedman should be glad to know he's not in the center of the controversy this time.
The charges and counter charges on race come after Friedman was criticized for comments he has made -- including racially charged comments form a long-ago stage act that he said were meant as anti-racist satire.

Asian Media Watch | Viacom/CBS's Survivor: Race Baiting for Ratings
Viacom/CBS has defended its decision to divide 'Survivor' contestants by race as an attempt at diversity and is asking viewers to watch the show before passing judgment.
However, CBS has had a poor record of racial diversity in casting: both the 'Survivor' contestants and the actors in CBS's Fall 2006 scripted primetime season are predominantly White.
Now the show's producers are using the race card to boost ratings.

Sister Toldjah » Race-baiting Democrats and the media’s complicity
In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the topic of race relations has once again stirred contentious debates amongst liberals and conservatives in this country, considering that the racial make-up of the victims we saw on the news channels broadcasting scenes from New Orleans everyday was/is overwhelmingly fl.
The most absurd of the many allegations made against the federal government for their ’slow response’ to Hurricane Katrina have come from fl Democrats in the US Congress, in state governments, and in various ‘leadership’ and spokesperson positions.
On Republicans and race, Jack Kemp was an exception to the rule and that’s probably because (if I recall correctly) he didn’t say anything that would offend those who are offended by statements that may be considered inflammatory but were true in nature regardless.

So, while everyone--regardless of race, gender, religion, nationality, sexual preference, political affiliation, or ideological orientation—is welcome to express their personal opinions about the topics we examine, these opinions will be open to criticism.
