Race music and records, therefore, were also the primary medium for African-American musical expression during the 1920s and 1930s; an estimated 15,000 titles were released on race records--approximately 10,000 blues,; 3,250 jazz,; and 1,750 gospel songs were produced during those years.
Race records are significant historical documents of early-twentieth-century African American music and have been and remain influential to artists, audiences, and scholars alike.
Race records were separated from the recordings of white musicians, and records based solely because of the race of the artists.

Unlike the pioneer blues and jazzmen of the 1920s—whose contributions to American music are duly documented and appreciated today—the achievements of their forgotten predecessors are all but erased from history: the sound too limited, the grooves too noisy, the words too painful.
Beginning with the minstrels who played "Negro" music on stage in flface in a spirit of parody, Wondrich traces the evolution of hot music into ragtime ("Coon" music, it was called), blues, and jazz.
Much later hot music is preserved on sound recordings, which Wondrich references while discussing major performers and composers (a CD containing some of the music will be released simultaneously with the book).

The Idle Race - Free Music Downloads, Videos, CDs, MP3s, Bio, Merchandise and Links
Although the city never produced a group as big as the Beatles, it was a seething cauldron of musical activity and home to literally hundreds of groups whose activities and memberships were in a constant state of ferment, yielding acts such as the Move, the Moody Blues,..
A strange mix of cheerful psychedelic pop/rock juxtaposed with the ambience of the English music hall and a vaguely suggested dark side, The Birthday Party was a far cry from the most easily absorbed psychedelia, and it was a commercial failure.
Jeff Lynne was offered the chance to replace Trevor Burton in the Move, but he refused, preferring to remain with the Idle Race, where he took on a still greater role in the shaping of the group's sound, co-producing their next few singles.

Although their sphere of effective action was to some degree circumscribed by race, class, and geographical location, the Chatmons’ position as agrarian-proletarian-artisans of ‘mixed race’ appears to have allowed them a degree of social latitude available to few African Americans in early 20th century rural Mississippi.
The relative prosperity and stability of the Chatmon clan was in large part based upon carefully husbanded musical skills, and a cosmopolitan, incorporative approach to music-making which allowed them to weave a set of socioeconomic relationships that crossed the color line (echoing, though not reproducing exactly, their recognized genealogical links to local white families).
Musically speaking, we have entered an alternative universe: a moderate bolero tempo, with ‘plinky’ arpeggiated guitar chords (dripping with tremolo), angelic vocal pads, maracas and woodblock (sonic icons of Latin romance), and dramatic soli scoring for string orchestra, bathed in studio reverb.

 Race Music: CHAPTER ONE
The church's musical repertory comprised a combustible mixture of congregational Pentecostal "church songs," sung prayers, impromptu ditties, compositions for gospel choir in contemporary and traditional styles (original and covers), and, of course, Elder Campbell's virtuoso preaching style, which always featured the speech-song "tuning-up" as the climax of the worship service.
Moreover, the musical styles combined with "the teaching" and other modes of socialization to create community primarily because of the strong sense of tradition and the higher purpose of evangelizing the world.
Musical practice had sparked a flood of memories, and I felt compelled to understand the social, cultural, historical, and material grounding of that experience.

PBS - JAZZ A Film By Ken Burns: Jazz Exchange - Race Records
By the time the recording industry got on its feet again in the mid-30s with the advent of crooners such as Bing Crosby and bandleader Benny Goodman, what had been known as "race" music was firmly ensconced in the center of the popular culture.
Small Jazz, Race (by now reacting to growing sophistication of jazz with what became known as rhythm and blues) and Hillbilly labels flourished, eagerly competing for the small but still financially rewarding segment of the population ignored by the major labels.
But it is indisputable that most of the artists who recorded for the all of the "race" labels were exploited out of performer, composing and publishing royalties, and that the great bulk of exploitation was directed at fl and other minority artists.
