Racer was first released in August 2000, and has been continuously updated up to the present day.
Whilst the Racer community contributes to testing and suggesting features that should be added - the development side of Racer is very much based on the amount of time the developers have to contribute towards it.

 GameSpy: Ridge Racer 6 Preview
Getting a Ridge Racer game is like a rite of passage for a console; once you've got one you're somehow legitimized as being worthy of hosting Namco's most enduring racing game.
Simply dubbed Ridge Racer 6, the version on display at TGS revealed a smooth, pretty game that will not be straying far from its roots.
Some may say Ridge Racer 6 goes too far into arcade territory (if there is such a thing) but it could be hard to level such a charge against one of the series that actually helped define "arcade-style" physics.

 IGN: Ridge Racer DS Review
And that's certainly not a bad thing considering that Ridge Racer 64 was a pretty top-notch racer on the N64 a half decade ago, an impressive, NST-developed extension of the Namco arcade racing franchise.
Ridge Racer 64 was already a successful game design on the console, even though its existence was more the "fl sheep" of the series due to the fact that it was, gasp, a Western-developed version of a decidedly Japanese franchise.
At the series' core, it's a balls-out arcade racer, and Ridge Racer 64/Ridge Racer DS remains true to the franchise by focusing on tremendous speed, tight action, and intense racing competition.

It's definitely an arcade racer and not a sim by any means, and exaggerated physics are par for the course.
Powersliding has always been a big part of the Ridge Racer experience, but right now it seems like the braking effect when sliding into a turn may be a little overzealous as a simple tap while turning will whip you nearly 180 degrees, making the car very slidey and difficult to control around corners.
However, the biggest problem with Ridge Racer 6 at this point seems to be the lack of a real sense of speed, even in nitro mode.

But Ridge Racer has always been there, and the loyal fanbase that PlayStation has earned over the years built much of its dedication on top of a special affection for this racing game.
Ridge Racer is so good and so fun that you might find yourself wishing they had brought it out for the big screen as Ridge Racer 6, but there's something small and cozy to the feel of it that fits PSP perfectly.
What this PSP revival of Ridge Racer is missing is the complications of a modern racer: the character and emotion used to draw players into the racing world, the fetishistic car modification system that makes decisions your own to succeed with or suffer from.

The boost of the two fuselages pulls the carriage forward at speeds in excess of 600mph and a stream of pure energy, called a mag beam or coupler, makes sure that the engines don't fly off in opposite directions.

Unlike the movie, which features 18 opposing racers, Episode I Racer stars more than 21 characters complete with their rides, including three pods based on original design concepts that weren't used in the final film.
