Zelda II took a radically different approach to the original, a fact that has resulted in countless heated debates regarding the game's overall quality.
While the side-scrolling perspective can be somewhat off-putting to newcomers of the Zelda experience, Zelda II is still a highly entertaining game and in some ways the deepest in the series even to this day.

If you're one of those people who actually cares about the Zelda timeline and how all of those bubble-headed elfin boys are related to one another, N-Sider has a ponderous, somewhat fruity Zelda timeline up for perusal.
This would probably be attributed to the existence of new races (Goron, Kokori, Deku, et cetra), and the fact that there were new directors (story tellers).
I think a race's absence from a game is not that important in determining chronology or canonicity (if that's even a word) - they may just be hibernating, or in areas not visited by Link that time, or gone off on their yearly spawning migration or something.

An integral part of Zelda games are the dungeons, which are multi-level areas that you must negotiate and explore in order to unlock access to the boss lurking somewhere within.
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is aptly named, as it is a gaming legend that is worthy of the name Zelda in every way.
