Rachel Paiement (born 1955 in Sturgeon Falls, Ontario) is a former Canadian musician and songwriter.
Paiement, a franco-ontarian, was a singer and songwriter for the band CANO in the 1970s.
After leaving CANO in 1980, Paiement married Jim Vallance, a frequent songwriting collaborator of Bryan Adams, and wrote the French lyrics for "Tears Are Not Enough".

The group was formed by the singers-guitarists André Paiement and Rachel Paiement, the violinist Wasyl Kohut, the guitarists Marcel Aymar and David Burt, the pianist Mike Kendel, the bassist John Doerr and the drummer Mike Dasti.
André Paiement died in 1978, Kohut in 1981.
Following the departure of Rachel Paiement in 1980, the remaining musicians recorded Camouflage (1981, SP 9060) under the name Masque.

By 1975 CANO had signed to A & M and began releasing french language albums albums to critical success though commercial sales eluded them.
In 1978 founding member Andre Paiement committed suicide.
It wasn't until 1979's 'Rendezvous', produced by Jim Vallance (Bryan Adams, Prism), and a switch to predominantly English language material that the records began to sell - though still not in the quantities warranting a 'hit record'.

 'Tears Are Not Enough'
Northern Lights predated a similar US project, USA For Africa (which made 'We Are The World').
'Tears Are Not Enough' was composed by David Foster (music), Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance (words), with additional French lyrics by Rachel Paiement.
Paul Hyde and Bob Rock (Payola$) have also received credit for their contribution.The recording was produced by Foster 10 Feb 1985 at the Manta Sound studios in Toronto using an instrumental track previously recorded in Vancouver.

 Northern Lights
On February 10, 1985 53 Canadian recording artists gathered at Manta Sound Studios in Toronto, to donate their time and talent to record a song written by David Foster (music), Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance (words).
Additional French lyrics were provided by Rachel Paiement.
The idea for producing the "Tears Are Not Enough" album and song came after the success Band Aid, USA for Africa, Band für Africa, and the Hear N' Aid projects.

It was a good start, but David had to rush away for a session with The Payolas, promising to return the following day.
I continued work on the lyrics, while my wife Rachel wrote a few lines in French (c'est l'amour qui nous rassemble, d'ici a l'autre bout du monde) -- after all, it was a Canadian song for Africa!
Then Bryan and Rachel recorded the vocals, to serve as a "guide track" for the singers who would eventually be involved.

Most notable was the Canadian answer to Band-Aid.
The star-studded "Tears Are Not Enough" teamed Adams with Vallance, his wife, former CANO singer Rachel Paiement, and super producer David Foster to raise millions of dollars for African hunger relief.
In 1990, Adams and Vallance dissolved their partnership, and Bryan hooked up with the meticulous Robert John "Mutt" Lange.
