The X Series were the latest line of ATI cards that was meant to counter rival NVIDIA's GeForce 6 Series.
When ATI released specifications for their X series, many users were surprised at the fact ATI had decided not to include support for shader model 3.0, as nVidia had in their lineup of cards.

ATI Radeon X1900 XTX (512MB) Reviews. Graphics Cards Reviews by CNET.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
We'll merely state as fact that the Radeon X1900 XTX is bulky due to the large fan and cooling assembly; it occupies one x16 PCI Express lot, while blocking access to the x1 or x4 PCI Express slot next to it.
The Radeon X1900 XTX has 48 lanes for processing surface details, up from the 16 on the X1800 XT and twice as many as the 24 on the GeForce 7900 GTX.
To sum up, while the Radeon X1900 XTX will give you the fastest single card today, as well as the most feature-rich single- or dual-card configuration, neither its price nor its performance are up-to-snuff in forward-looking games.

 X-bit labs - Print version
RADEON X1600 XT and RADEON X1300 PRO left a completely different impression: their fans have always been working at the highest rotation speed and generated a lot of unbearable noise, which got especially annoying after you have been listening to it for couple of hours.
RADEON X1800 XL is also ahead of all other testing participants although the gap to the nearest follower is not as significant as between the top model and the others.
RADEON X1600 XT and RADEON X1300 PRO are designed on more compact and practical PCBs, although their reference cooling systems could use some improvement in terms of the level of generated noise.

Radeon R420 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Radeon R420 core from ATI Technologies was their 3rd-generation DirectX 9.0-capable graphics chip.
Used first on the Radeon X800, R420 was produced on a 0.13 micrometer (130 nm) low-K process and used GDDR-3 memory.
Later the X550 was created, a quietly launched addition to the Radeon X series set to replace the X300 series, using the same chip as X300 (RV370).

ATI's Radeon X700 XT graphics card - The Tech Report - Page 1
In the case of the chip behind the Radeon X700 series, the RV410, one would expect ATI to slice an R420 into two and call it a day.
Like the competition, the Radeon X700 family will first be available as PCI Express cards, in part because the RV410 GPU has a PCI Express interface onboard, and in part because the big PC makers like Dell already prefer to sell PCI Express-based systems.
The Radeon X700 XT card has dimensions very similar to the Radeon 9600 XT that preceded it, and it's very nearly the same size as a GeForce 6600 GT.

ATI's Radeon X800 XL graphics card - The Tech Report - Page 1
ATI's new Radeon X850 series of graphics chips a couple of weeks back, we said that the more exciting development in ATI's re-spin of its high-end products was probably the Radeon X800 XL, a card slated to replace the Radeon X800 Pro.
Those of you who read our Radeon X850 XT review may recall that ATI's original plan for the Radeon X800 XL was to deliver this card for $349, cleverly positioned between NVIDIA's GeForce 6800 and 6800 GT products.
We're pretty familiar with the Radeon X series and GeForce 6 series products by now, and one could reasonably expect the Radeon X800 XL, with its combination of sixteen pipes and a 400MHz clock speed, to offer performance at least comparable to the GeForce 6800 GT for fifty bucks less.

The "9550" index points to the evident kinship to the ATI Radeon 9600 chip which is confirmed in the reality: ATI Radeon 9550 is the screening of ATI Radeon 9600 at frequencies.
Therefore, the differences between ATI Radeon 9600 and our today's specimen - ATI Radeon 9550 - are only in the clock speeds of the graphic processor.
We wouldn't be surprised if soon we see boards on the base of the ATI Radeon 9550 chip with the memory bus width cut down to 64 bit in the price lists of computer companies.

X-bit labs - Articles - ATI RADEON X1000: Brand-New Graphics Architecture from ATI Explored (page 2)
While NVIDIA’s G70 was a greatly improved NV40, the RADEON X1000 is a completely new architecture that has little in common with ATI’s previous generations of GPUs.
Note that the RADEON X1600 (RV530) targeted for the mainstream market segments consists of 157 million transistors, while RADEON X1300 (RV515) is claimed to be the first value chip that is built of about 100 million transistors.
Moreover, the memory of the senior RADEON X1800 works at a huge frequency of 750 (1500) MHz which can theoretically yield an up to 48GB/s bandwidth (ATI quotes a smaller number, 42GB/s).

I've had a Dell computer for just over 2 years fitted with a 128mb Radeon 9800 Pro card which stopped working a couple of days ago.
Having read all the internet sales information on the Radeon X series cards I found a Sapphire Radeon X800XL 256mb AGP version which I bought for £299.00 - not cheap.
I was expecting this next generation card to have far better frame rates in FS2004 (my main game) than the 9800 pro, but if anything its slightly worse with the setup in FS2004 unchanged.

ATI introduces their mainstream video card series based on flagship X800 technology and we take a look at what level of gaming experience the Radeon X700XT is delivering directly compared to NVIDIA's GeForce 6600GT.
For Unreal Tournament 2003 and Unreal Tournament 2004 CATALYST A.I. performs an advanced level of texture analysis (on all RADEON X Series products) to provide significantly higher performance levels with no distinguishable difference in image quality.
So this basically means for Radeon X series products the drivers will now let the application decide what texture stages get what filtering.

ATI rolls out X300, X800 mobile GPUs | The Register
ATI has extended its PCI Express-based mobile graphics processor line-up further upmarket and downward with the addition of high- and low-end chips to its Mobility Radeon X series.
Unlike the Mobility X300 and previously released Mobility X600, the X800 is based on ATI's most up-to-date Radeon architecture and is equipped the HD versions of ATI's SmartShader, VideoShader and SmoothVision technologies.
In that sense it has more in common with the Mobility Radeon 9800 that the other X-class GPUs - what defines the latter is PCI-E support rather than latest-generation technology.
