About: Radiance is a set of tools which provide an advanced lighting simulation software package.
It combines the advantages of Web-based software (like zero client installation) with the usability of desktop software.
It allows very detailed definition of materials' and light sources' properties through the use of advanced techniques like brdf and ies files, as well as a powerful mathematical scripting language, resulting in accurate renderings of scenes which are usually imported from CAD and 3D modelers.

 Licensing Announcement
LBNL intends to use a small group of advisors, headed by Greg Ward, the "Father" of Radiance to evaluate software contributions and include them in upcoming releases.
We intend that end-user applications using the LBNL version of the Radiance software will be entitled to use a "Powered by Radiance" logo (although this logo does not exist yet) to indicate that the underlying engine is the LBNL-approved version of the Radiance engine.
To address the expected "versioning issue", LBNL will maintain an official version of the Radiance software that will include all of the new functionality developed by LBNL and contributed by Radiance developers that has been evaluated and approved for inclusion.

Photon Mapping on Programmable Graphics Hardware - Beyond3D Forum
So the software renderer is rendering 3 times more pixels, is shooting 400 times more photons for the radiance estimate (and about the same amount of photons for the caustics) and it’s still 4.2 times faster than the hardware renderer.
As you can see here (http://graphics.ucsd.edu/~henrik/images/cbox.html), a similar scene can be rendered at 1024x768 in 15 seconds with a software renderer on a dual P3 at 800 MHz using 50000 photons for the caustics and 200000 photons for the radiance estimate.
Photon mapping was a spin off of the raytracing work.

Graphics File Formats FAQ (Part 3 of 4): Where to Get File Format Specifications
This format is not intended to be a native file format of any hardware or software platform, but instead to be used as an interchange medium used for converting one VRML format to another.
Translators are available from 3D Studio and Radiance rendering formats, and to Inventor, VRML and Radiance.
But because of the kludged evolution of the PCX format (caused partly by the efforts of Zsoft to continue to support the ever-changing world of graphics display adapters) it is generally advised that the MS Windows BMP format be used in place of PCX whenever possible.

But now that TrueType fonts are a normal option with DataCAD (and in other up-to-date software), we no longer have to mimic those fonts; we have them all at our disposal without any extra effort.
With increased DWG/DXF export control, as well as the growing popularity of PDF as a transfer format, CAD users have been turning to programs such as Adobe Illustrator, CorelDraw, Lightscape, Radiance, DesignWorkshop®, and Sketchup to do sun studies, for instance, and to create advanced tone and shading effects.
In the past, much energy was devoted to mimicking desktop publishing fonts within traditional CAD software.
