Radif, which literally means 'sequence', lays out the relationship and ways to modulate among its modes (microtonal tetrachords).
Up to about a hundred years ago, the Radif was preserved solely through oral tradition, passed directly from master to student.
Much of the development of the music was either at the court of the kings or by the solitary work of few musicians.

According to others (who constitute the majority), Radif remains the reference, but one must be able to free oneself from it after having assimilated it, in order to produce one’s own music.
Such analysis does not aim to cast doubt on the validity of the Radif, but simply to suggest that there are many openings to explore within the Radif which are not alien to the spirit of traditional music.
Of course, to hurry through the different stages and to claim to be able to dispense with the artistic and spiritual discipline inherent in the study of the Radif is to invite decadence.

A Ghazal in short, is a collection of couplets (called sher) which follow the rules of Matla, Maqta, Beher, Qaafiyaa, Radif, Khayaal and Wazan.
The second line of each couplet in a ghazal ends with the repetition of a refrain of one or a few words, known as a Radif, preceded by a rhyme (though in a less strict ghazal the rhyme does not need to precede the refrain immediately), known as a Kaafiyaa.
In modern Urdu poetry, there are lots of Ghazals which do not follow the restriction of same Beher on both the lines of Sher.

Radif (row) is the total number of traditional pieces in the repertory of Persian classical music and each ostad (master) of the art has his own particular version according to his special style and training.
The radif is distinguished by individual pieces called gushe which are grouped together under separate collective titles, the twelve dastgah-ha, seven main ones and five subordinate ones, avaz or nagmeh, although each of the twelve dastgah-ha are accepted as of equal value by contemporary musicians and laymen.
There are some players who perform the learned radif almost identically, and lack of personal style, inspiration, and expressive ideas are evident in their performances.

Given this highly personalized tradition of the Radif, it is perhaps easier understood why there exist different methods of taxonomizing the various parts and pieces of the radif.
