Radio Ceylon is the oldest radio station in South Asia.
In the first ever radio experiments in Colombo, gramophone music was broadcast from a tiny room in the Central Telegraph Office with the aid of a small transmitter built by the Telegraph Department engineers from the radio equipment of a captured German submarine.
Radio Ceylon became a public corporation on 30th September 1967 and the station's name was changed to the Ceylon Broadcasting Corporation.

I entered Radio Ceylon  (As it was known those days) as a writer, but eventually the glamour of being an actor of radio dramas made me to go for it.
Most of the radio actors were able to act in stage plays and even films as well.

Vernon was appointed as an Announcer in Radio Ceylon in 1957 by the Director of the Commercial Service, Clifford R.Dodd.
Announcers were the 'pop stars' of that generation and Radio Ceylon occupied a very special place in the hearts of South Asians in India, West Pakistan, East Pakistan, Maldives, Nepal, Bhutan and there were listeners even in Burma.

Publishers in Colombo are poised to reprint the poetry books and stories for children written by the legendary Sri Lankan lyricist, Karunaratne Abeysekera who died in 1983.
Karunaratne Abeysekera came to prominence as a teenage broadcaster on a children's radio program called 'Lama Pitiya.' He was only 15 years old when he joined the program presented by 'Siri Aiya.' Abeysekera joined the panel of broadcasters of Radio Ceylon in 1950.
He contributed to the success of Radio Ceylon, the oldest radio station in South Asia.
