The Daily Vault Album Reviews : Radio City
But you have to hear Radio City to know what pop songs should sound like and realize where so many current pop bands have dredged their musical rip-offs from.
Radio City's themes are the themes rock n roll was founded on--rebellion, sex (love?), and loud guitars.
Radio City is their legacy left for all to ponder, study, and well yeah, rip-off.

A two-fer combining Big Star's first and second albums, #1 Record/Radio City remains a definitive document of early-'70s American power pop and a virtual blueprint for much of the finest alternative rock that came after it.
However, Radio City shifts gears dramatically: Bell is largely absent (though he guests, uncredited, on a few tracks, including the wonderful "Back of a Car"), allowing Chilton's darker impulses free reign.
Erratic mixing, spotty production, shaky performances -- by all rights, Radio City should be a failure, yet Chilton is at his best when poised on the brink of disaster, and the songs hang together seemingly on faith and conviction alone.

Largely lacking co-leader Chris Bell, Big Star's second album also lacked something of the pop sweetness (especially the harmonies) of #1 Record.

If #1 Record had a certain pop perfection that brought everything together, Radio City was the sound of everything falling apart, which proved at least as compelling.

Once the most influential radio guru of his generation, Abrams pioneered systematic audience research and "psychographics," connecting people's lifestyles to their listening habits.
The rise of AOR was the beginning of the end for the brief, storied era of free-form radio and iconoclastic DJs - "some guy in a basement in Brooklyn, burning incense and playing whatever he pleased," as Abrams describes the late-'60s scene.
The new company, XM Satellite Radio, aimed to blow open the formulaic programming of AM and FM - a formula that Abrams, though he's now loath to admit it, devised.

Dead City Radio (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dead City Radio is a musical album by Beat Generation author William S. Burroughs, which was released by Island Records in 1990.
Although not Burroughs' first album -- he released his first spoken world album, Call Me Burroughs in the 1960s and was a fixture on the Giorno Poetry Systems collections of the 1970s and 1980s -- this was the first release to receive wide public attention.
The material performed by Burroughs on the album included excerpts from some of his famous works such as Naked Lunch, as well as a couple of items from his 1989 short story collection Tornado Alley.

The album is worth buying for the first seven tracks alone, which are all quite standard in structure compared to other Naked City songs.
However, they are also some of Naked City's best, from the rockabilly "Party Girl" to the Far East jazz romp of "Terkmani Teepee." As the album progresses, the songs start to slowly deconstruct into an atonal, genre jumping insanity.
My original impression of Naked City's was that it didn't sound or look as good as the first Naked City album, and that it didn't have as much feeling.

Erykah Badu - May 09, 2008 at Radio City Music Hall
The grooves and production on the album are bass-heavy R&B, but Badu's langurous, occasionally tortured vocals and delicate phrasing immediately removed her from the legion of cookie-cutter female R&B singers.
A singer/songwriter responsible for all but one of the songs on Baduizm, she found a number 12 hit with her first single "On & On," which pushed the album to number two on the charts.
In 2000 Badu returned with her highly anticipated second studio album, Mama's Gun, which she co-produced, and contained the hit single "Bag Lady." Worldwide Underground, a loose affair billed as an EP despite being longer than many full-lengths, was released in 2003.
