Radio Flyer: (Hans Zimmer) If you want to study about a film that definitely should never have been made, then Radio Flyer is your case in point.
Unfortunately, Radio Flyer falls into the trap of an impossible reality: a mother of two children remarries an abusive alcoholic, but she doesn't know that he is beating the younger son.
Having seen another child attempt to fly on his Radio Flyer wagon (and being crippled by it), the two brothers decide that the only way to escape the abuse is to build their own flying wagon and attempt to have the beaten brother fly away to safety.

deseretnews.com - Movie review: Radio Flyer | Deseret Morning News Web edition
"Radio Flyer" is a most disturbing film, not at all the feel-good "E.T." kind of movie its TV ad spots seem to be promoting.
"Radio Flyer" is the story of two young boys, one regularly beaten by his drunken stepfather and the other is his slightly older brother, who tries desperately to protect him.
"Radio Flyer" is an uncomfortable mix of real-life horror and whimsy — and it's certainly not a family film.

A cute but uneven coming of age story, narrated in flashback by its protagonist (an uncredited Tom Hanks) and starring Wood and Mazzello as the brothers subject to appalling physical abuse when they move to a new town to live with their stepfather.
The solution to their problems appears to be to build a flying machine out of their old wheeled radio flyer cart.
Director Donner is obviously well-meaning, but the film comes over as an expensive muddle; there are some touching scenes, and as this is aimed at youngsters, the abuse is largely glossed over.
